Help identifying where this part came from

Hi all
A little help please identifying where this part may have come from.
After installing the mr12volt mmi unit I found a small part laying in the driver’s side footwell, it is a flat piece of plastic with a clips on two sides and a cog in the middle.

I’m wondering if it could be part of the climate control ventilation system.

It allows you to add Apple CarPlay or Android Auto amongst other things to the iDrive.

The only way to upgrade the idrive display is by replacing it with a Chinese android unit but usually only those with cars without idrive do this. Personally I wanted to keep the car standard so I didn’t do this and just added the MMI box to my existing screen.

MMI applies to all boxes of this type and not exclusive to the one from Mr12Volt.
