HELP! :( House broken into!

Then just swap out the ews module (10min job) when you replace the locks + get the keys cut to match one supplied with second hand lock set.

If you've changed the EWS couldn't you keep the key the same? The transponder chip will be coded different? (so even if the people that stole the keys come along, the key might turn but wouldn't actually start the engine).

My point being, surely you can get a key cut to match the car without the need to replace all the locks?

That still leaves the “what if” around whether or not the thieves still have the keys. The wouldn’t be able to start it BUT they could still unlock it and tow it away if they were so inclined. Or just unlock it and steal stuff from inside it.

I wouldn’t take the risk myself - I’d replace the locks

Hi Guys

Just a quick follow up on the situation to date.

By some miracle I found a fellow Z4 owner who has sold me the EWS module, one key and all the barrels for the car for just 40 quid.

Bargain of the century! He ended up misplacing his keys and replaced the whole set only to find a spare key after installation so put the set up on Ebay.

Today they have arrived with me in Australia.

So now I am going to go and start my mission of bringing baby Z back to life and out of the secure lock up.

I have looked on the net regarding the placement of the EWS. Is it located under the steering rack?

I will be replacing the whole barrel set with what I have purchased which should make the stolen keys defunct.

As I will be swopping out the ignition barrel I wont need to delete the old keys as it shouldn't work in the ignition barrel??

I only have one key so will need to look at some point regarding a spare for it.

On a side note I spoke with BMW Perth again and one replacement key would be $482 bucks i.e 270 pounds but like it has been mentioned if the keys are still about I run the risk of them coming back and taking the car.

Also as the car has not moved now for 12 months what would you guys recommend I should do to get it back up and running.

The fuel light was on when I parked it up last so must be little in there.

A new battery would be required.

Anything else???

Thanks again heaps for everyone's input. Without you guys I would just have a huge bill from BMW to contend with.

Regards

1) The EWS module is just above the footwell speaker. (These are old pics when I had mine out to code new keys. My interior is all black now). Remove the trim under the steering column, and you should then be able to see it above the speaker. Also see my write up here: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=100603 . I should add, the key cutting is a pain in the arse ha - so don't bother with trying to CUT yourself, get a local key cutter to cut the blade

2) No, the old keys will become useless because the transponder is in the key, and accepted/declined by the EWS module. So need to do anything other than what you're already doing.

3) That's a lot of money. BEFORE you fit you your new EWS module, at least look into this:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/New-For-BMW-INPA-K-CAN-K-CAN-INPA-With-FT232RL-Chip-with-Switch-for-BMW/32799744696.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dpjQLGg

Just £18 and is all you need to code new keys.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/QCONTROL-Car-Remote-Key-DIY-for-BMW-EWS-X3-X5-Z3-Z4-1-3-5-7/32831949066.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.27424c4dpjQLGg

£4.70 each. Those are the blanks I've used for myself and others. They include everything - so that includes the Remote AND the transponder.

As for the how-to, I'm more than happy to help guide you through it should you go ahead and buy them (the AK90+ and some keys).

All you would then need to do, is code the new keys to the EWS whilst you have it out. Once coded, you can fit the new EWS module, then in your free time, take the keys to a key cutter who will simply just cut the blade to match the blade from your new set. They won't need o program it etc as you will have already done it, so should be cheap to get cut. Get yourself a couple of keys so you can have 2 spares and 1 'main'

Awesome mate.
Thanks again for all your help, I would of been stuck without it.
For now I need to get the car up and running and out of storage.
I will order your suggestions and take out the module again when they arrive.
If you don't mind I will be in contact to make sure I am doing things right.
Thanks for taking the time out to help.
Regards Stefan.

No problem :) happy to help.

To be fair, it's only a 10-15 min job getting the EWS module in and out - and even that's only because it's in an awkward position

when your gear arrives just give me a shout and I'll help

Hi Guys
I thought I would update you with regards to getting my z4 back up and running.
We changed out the EWS module which was easy enough. Tick!
Then we went online with regards to changing out the ignition barrel. What a disaster! It seems you cannot take out the original barrel unless you have the original BMW key along with the tool to release it from its position. So we went to work with a drimel and cut the metal work around the key so we could expose the lock barrel. We then managed to take the new key and a diy tool to pull out the ignition lock and removed the EMS antenna which surrounds the lock.
We then reinstalled everything and installed a new battery.
Went to fire her up and nothing. The ignition comes on all lights etc on the dash board but no spark!
Next we checked the fuel and it was a golden colour so drained out the fuel and put in 10l of fresh 98 Ron into the car.
Tried again to turn the car over and again starter motor works but no spark.
Check the spark plugs and they are fine. Compression is fine also.
Used a can of "Start You Bastard" got to love living in Oz!
Engine splutters but wont hold revs and dies.

NOW FURTHER QUESTION TIME

So ideas on why the engine wont turn over?
Is it still an immobiliser issue?
Or is it that I am running the original DME Module still in the car with the new ignition key and EWS module so not getting the final green light to fire.

My idea is maybe get the AK90+ and use the original EWS module and reprogram the key I have. At the same time purchase a couple of spare keys.

Any suggestions you have will be welcomed with open arms as this is breaking my heart.

Thanks guys.

What do you mean by splutters and dies? Does the motor run freely at all for a second or 2 or is it just turning over on the starter?

Sounds immobiliser related to me.

The 'Start, you bastard!" stuff will self ignite on compression alone, so no spark needed. I agree on an immobiliser issue.

I reckon to be safe you've got 2 choices 1. to change the locks and get the new stuff coded (which of course means new keys) or 2. get 2x new keys from BMW, delete the old keys from the car's ECU and do a door/boot lock delete...
