Help! Horrendous noise from the front!

So I've got a Z4 me and a mate share. 2004 with 65k miles.

Last year we had her serviced, refurbed wheels, new tyres, tracking, expansion tank done and gasket seal. All running fine- apart from the odd sticky steering when going round a bend (you're turning and the wheel seems to stick in a position and it takes some work to turn it to where you want it)

Anyway- she's be sat in the garage for the winter, occasionally started up and moved out onto the drive and then back- everything fine. Last moved a few weeks back.

Today- I decide to bring her out as insurance starts again on monday to a horrible noise! At first I thought the brakes were stuck on as I moved forwards slightly. But soon realised it wasn't so stopped. I've uploaded a video of what it sounds like when turning the wheel stationary to here: https://youtu.be/0bqJWL1h_0k

Also it seems the car has sunk a bit at the front, another video here: https://youtu.be/TJ10Q6jxL_k

Any ideas? Don't want to try to move it, but cannot get it to a garage as its sat in mine!!

Please help :)

Never heard clanking of that magnitude before, have you had the bonnet up to try & pinpoint it? :?
I wouldn’t drive it making that noise.

Hi Rob-

Had the bonnet up and nothing obvious. I wanted to jack it up- but my 2.5 tonne scissor jack starts too high to get under it!

Definitely not driving it- something certainly isn't right!

To my ear that doesn't sound to be part of the rhythm of the engine running - reminds me of the pressure release valve on a truck or bus air compressor. Blocked breather? core loose in a spark plug (yes I've had it and the missfire was a bugger to find - but that's another story); blockage in the exhaust system (yep I've had mice as well); damaged/obstructed serpentine belt or sticking belt tensioner. Never had to get into my Zed engine but get the bonnet up and start looking.

Thanks both- will move to the correct section.

The noise isn't the engine- engine is sweet. The noise was coming when turning the wheel...

check for broken road springs catching on leg/arch as you move steering. (as above!)

oh dear! :o
Very strange, have you had a look under the front? Id have initially assumed a collapsed front suspension but its on both sides which would be unusual

Look OK there. I was worried it had cracked around that area. More than likely spring related then. Only way to know for sure is jacking it up.

Must be a broken coil spring or something surely? Either that or something's gone horribly wrong with one of the suspension components/mounts.

Best get it in the air and get the wheels off.

Deffo front spring, same sound as mine when it went... cheap to replace, and I would do both sides while you’re at it.
