Help! Engine cover fixing screws?

Hi,

I have a screw missing (I did have a screw loose, now it is worse!) from the engine cover (the cosmetic plastic cover on top of the engine) on my Z4C 3.0 N52 silver top. It is not the end of the world, but every time I open the bonnet I hear the music from the excorcist in my head and I can't take my eyes away from the glaring hole it has left behind.

I have tried a variety of look-a-likes from ebay, but none are of the correct size. It is one of those quarter turn 'jobbies' with a Torq drive head. Would like to buy three or four as I dropped this one into some gravel, now it is lost forever but I can still see myself repeating the trick again in the future.

Does anyone know either:
1) The proper part name?
2) The part Number?
3) A friend or acquaintance who has a limitless stock of said item they are willing to sell for a reasonable fee?

All help gratefully accepted.

Put your chassis number into Realoem and you’ll find the correct part number.

Interesting that this part is only used on the silver engine cover versions of the N52, later black top uses conventional M6 screws (maybe BMW technicians got sick of losing these!).

I think it’s to do with galvanic corrosion between two dissimilar metals. The later black n52 cover is plastic so not an issue.

I think there was a black & a silver plastic engine cover used on early n52 engines, both using the magnesium cam cover underneath.
Later cars had a plastic instead of magnesium cam cover :?

Have you looked on realoem?

Item no 10 I believe is what you are looking for:

The picture in your post looks exactly like the ones I need, however the ones from ebay I have tried, and they do not fit. The picture on the real OEM exploded diagram shows a different type of screw. This is why I am so very confused. :?

I took a quick look at the Realoem page for the engine cover for an early (silver cover) E86 and for a later model like mine (black cover) and the exploded assembly image looked to be the same even though the part numbers were different for the screws, so I’d say the exploded image is not necessarily representative of the exact model.

If in doubt, just order them from your local BMW dealer as they don’t appear to be a very expensive part from the figures shown on realoem.

Are these the fake fixers that are purely cosmetic and don't actually hold anything down anyway ?

Mine was missing after it's last visit to the workshop. I went back and they promptly ordered one and fitted it once it arrived. And showed me that they dont hold the lid on anyway, it's a clip fit.
Or does Marius want to come prove me wrong ?

The screws attach the plastic cover to the metal bracket which clips on to the camcover

Trip to Sycamore BMW in Peterborough and (x2) 11127531561 ordered (1 spare for the next time! ). Now fitted.

Thanks to everybody for their help.
