Help! EML on after one week

So we've done less than 200 miles in less than a week of ownership of the zed (2.0 E85, 67k miles). Just nipped out in it and the EML stays on! :(
Now my first thought is to head straight back to the dealer. But then I think that I don't want to leave it with him for a couple of days, while he "fixes" it by just clearing the codes and the light - I could do with getting a diagnostic of some kind first, to maybe see what we're dealing with.
So is it best to take it somewhere decent, or is someone local to me who knows what to look for and understands the code readings?
How much can the car be driven before a diagnostic test, with the EML on?
Advice and tips gratefully received.

A code read is the first thing you need, so that you know what the car actually thinks the problem is. Rather than add you say, letting the dealer just clear them and hope they don't reoccur. You can buy a cheap obd dongle for a fiver on ebay and use the "torque" app.

At least this way, if it comes up with something that needs attention, you are forewarned before going back to the dealer.

I'm happy to scan it for you in WA12, and email you a printout of the codes.

That sounds like a plan. I'm in WA15 so not too far. Let me know when is good.
Cheers

Personally from a consumer protection point of view, I would inform the dealer immediately and give them the opportunity to fix it. If the fault happens again after they attempted to repair the fault then you're entitled to a full refund. Make sure you follow up any phone calls with an email to them so you have a written trail of communication.

I know this doesn't help fix your problem but you need to protect your rights too.
Thanks. I certainly have no intention of bending over for them. But think it's sensible to get a diagnostic done first to see what the issue is. It's all too easy for a dealer to fix things by just making it go away for a while, leaving the issue there to come back again later on - maybe quite a bit later on, when they have more chance of adopting the Caveat Emptor approach.
Getting it looked at tomorrow, then off to the dealer when I'm a bit more knowledgeable. So far, I'm not unimpressed with the place, but proof of the pudding is how a trader deals with come-backs like this...
