Help - dead cat!

HI all

I've had the dreaded emissions light on recently.

Took it to my indie today and they have advised it needs a new exhaust catalyst (they also note cut rear pipe to fit).

I know there are two cats on the manifold pipes, are these the only ones or is there one underneath the car as normal too?

I have a 2008 2.0 sport, their quote is £770 + VAT for the catalyst plus labour and gasket = £1100!

If anyone can point me in the right direction for alternative part quotes or aftermarket replacement I would be grateful.

Thanks

Wes

That's what made me give up on mine-if you have a spare day or two search my posts!

Will two days be enough :? i suppose if he goes without sleep he could get through most of them :P

I thought you had killed a cat

Thanks for the comments.....killing a cat would be much cheaper, although less humane!

I couldn't find one over internet-they seem to start at 2.2L -breakers I thought I risked the chance of getting one just as bad-looked into getting a full stainless system-got fed up in the end after 2 years of emission light problems.

Thanks, it at least lightened the mood!!

I've emailed the garage to confirm whether its the manifold cat or in the middle underneath.....I have already thought about a stainless system so my need to look into quotes.

How did you get through your MOT :?

It passed the emission test no problem-but was told you could just not ignore the light as it adjusts the cars settings.

I thought new regulations meant that an engine warning light was an MOT failure ...

Before you start panicking and reaching for the wallet; is this the first time the emissions light has come one, or have you had it cancelled only for it to come back within a day or two?
If it's the first time, then consider buying a code reader for £30, read the code, note it then cancel the light. If it comes back within a day or two and the code is the same then you probably do have a problem that needs looking at, but if you cancel it and it doesn't come back, then you've saved some money.

Or get a second opinion. It could be just a lambda sensor, ask them to show you how they know it is the cat. They could be just reading "catalyst below threshold" on their reader.

Thanks, I have a code reader, cancelled it twice for it to come back a few hundred miles later.

They are a decent garage and said they took current readings while running and checking it out....will question to make sure

A good way to tell is an emissions test. If it fails then deffo cat  if it passes then more than likely not the cat. :)

My money is on post cat lamda sensor. :)
