A mate has asked if I want to get involved in a Banger Rally next year, he has seen this:

Looks a right laugh and we are well up for it. Another Rally vid:

Question is - anyone have any experience of these and can recommend one to go on?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Yep - i did Staples To Naples last year via a company called Street Safari

The rally was brilliant - we did up an old hurse - amazing laugh and saw so much
The organiser on the other hand wasnt so great - no very personal and overall didnt get much value from our entrance fee - he personally was a bit up he own if you get me. That despite the rally having <20 cars when in the past there has been >100

Overall - mega experience DO DO DO IT

We are doing another next year, just unsure which yet

Wouldn't it be better/cheaper to plan your own route. Get a few friends, each buy a cheap motor and head off? :driving:

Thanks jamiez, will steer clear of Street Safari but even more excited about the event now.

Chris - half the fun seems to be that you are part of something, with a load of other loons rally-ing round Europe. We are hoping to have a team of a few cars but to have challenges and events organised along the way ads to the fun

I did Home to Rome a couple of years ago through street safari. It was good fun but you dont feel like they care much for people who dont keep pace. So if you do get a car make sure it can handle the trip at speed so you can mingle with everyone else at the checkpoints otherwise you may as well be doing it on your own. We had a land rover that topped out at 60mph so really struggled to keep up with everyone. Just p1sses you of when you get to a checkpoint and everyone has been socialising and drinking for the last 4 hours and your knackered and late.

There were a couple of guys that just came a long for the ride and didnt even pay the entrance fee, which is perfectly possible if you want to. Its all public highways and bars/hotels so theres nothing stopping you just not paying the entrance fee. the challenges are good fun though which you probably wouldnt bother doing otherwise.

I did Sucata Split this year and made a little vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzH6cEKN1Mw

It was quite good fun but the cars were basically scrap, and there was quite a bit of loutish behaviour by some....undertaking on the inside, tailgaiting etc. It was more of an international bar crawl. The organisers babied everyone HARD, which is great if you are nervous....but driving in westernised EU countries is not tricky. That one was an awful lot of motorways, but the commaradery is good.

In 09 I did the Mongol Rally. That movie is a bit longer... :) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ui4GqB6Pih0

18 countries via Iran. Possibly the original banger rally but more of an adventure. Completely different, better atmosphere, by far the best thing I have ever done. Plenty of shenanigans where appropriate, but plenty of other stuff too to even it out. Took us 4 weeks (you can do the northern route through Ukraine in 3). Far easier than it sounds. Personally, I would rather do one MR than several EU banger rallies, it's worth the effort....
