Just plain lazy but looking for something that fits this lot:

Convertible but with metal folding roof not fabric
Seats 4
Petrol engine larger than 2 litre
Loses value fast so looking for used "bargain"

Volvo C70 is the obvious choice, VW Eos is another but not that keen, would love the latest shape 3-series but too much £££ secondhand

Anything else I should consider?

Any particular reason for not having a fabric roof? I had a Saab 2.8T Aero for a while. 250bhp, 0-60 in about 7 seconds. It ticks the deprciation box as you can pick up a 5 year old model With around 30K miles for under 7 grand. The roof was really thick and well insulated and reliability is much better than the Merc CLK convertible (cheaper for parts and servicing as well). There's also a 2 litre Aero available with (I think) about 210bhp.

If you're really desperate, Vauxhall twintop, Peugeot/Renault CC. The Volvo V70 has a good interior but unrewarding to drive and I think I would rather have the EOS but yes e93 would be my 1st choice too

If you go for the soft top then the A4 cabriolet is cheap and desirable, having owned a 2008 2.0 tdi model it does everything really well except entertain in its drive

I'd say an A4. There's some good priced ones about at the moment.

OP wants hard roof option only

volvo probably the best of the rest to meet his requirements ?

E46 M3 cabrio with a hardtop for winter.Sorted.4 seat folding hardtops have such massive roofs that they end up looking all wrong.

look at the entry level Mercedes SL for the hard top convertible. an sl350 from 2003-2005 can be had for as little as 12k!! absolute bargain given they start at 60k and the new sl350 is 82k! plus its a luxury convertible. hard tops rule. gl!

Eos would be my top option.

The megan cc has a nice glass roof though. But dull interior.

There is also the peugeot 30x and 20x which have a hardtop cc.

what's your budget? Max miles? Max engine size? max age? I still say sl350 would be sweet but depends what you're going to do with it.

Focus convertible?? The facelift shape looks pretty good & cheap now...

Depending on budget, the cars that fit into the 4 seat CC category I'd say look for a C70 T-5 or R but bear in mind it'll be quite GT and floaty compared to the sharp handling of the Z4.
