Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong section.

Secondly - hello, this is my first of hopefully many posts.

I've been looking at buying an 07 Z4 Coupe.

Found one for sale, only 40k on the clock. Unfortunately its a CAT D, and the trader states they have no idea why. Full VOSA MOT history, three BMW services.

Drives perfectly normal as far as I can tell, and the body work is spotless. Do I have anything to be worried about? Common faults?

Thanks in advance.

Hello & welcome :) buyers guide somewhere on forum should highlight known issues
As for the car you've mentioned :? whether it looks fine & drives without issue if its a Cat registered car it would need to be considerably cheaper than this example http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=81803
as in £2k cheaper :o if any more than £8500 id leave it alone & find one with no iffy past  jmo

Thanks, found the buyers guide so I'll have a read through that. I'll take another look Friday and make a call!

FYI the example you mentioned is a lovely car!

Is it that dark blue one with the cream interior in the north west by chance? Wouldn't touch a cat D with a barge pole as if you won't gel with it it'll be wedged up your backside for a very long time.

Yes it is, I understand it would be difficult to re-sell - but all being well I'd be keeping it for a few years using it as a daily drive.

I know everyone hates on CAT D's - but if it drives fine and looks fine, I'm not sure what the issue is? Obviously apart from lost car value.

I just want a Z4

Repairs are almost never as good as factory built. Paint isn't machine applied evenly, shut lines are by eye rather than factory jig perfect. Depending on the quality of the repairer they might not have spotted all the damage like a small hidden crack. Etcetera...

exactly, 'all being well' just warning you if you don't gel with it you'll have a bad time, people are only trying to help you.

My mate used to own that z4 coupe which is on ebay which you are looking at, and i belive it was involved in a heavy front ender.

Heya, I can relate. I recently brought a CAT D write off. Got it around £3k under suggested value. Yes the repairs aren't perfect to the trained eye and a few minor things not quite right but runs and drives faultlessly. I took the gamble and am happy. It depends how picky you are with the details. After all a CAT D is supposed to only be cosmetic should run and drive fine, just take a good look at the body work, the plastics both under the belly and under the bonnet. Try all of the electrics to make sure no sensors or electrics were damaged.

One random fix on mine is that it has two different windscreen washer jets, both work, but obvious sign of replacement.

I'd say go for it! But I am not to adverse to taking a risk.

To me if it was a car i really wanted but didn't have the budget for and cat d made it buyable (is that even a word) then i would be tempted, i would however have it inspected by a knowledgeable mechanic, I'd want it bloody cheap, the fact is an 07 at a dealer makes me think though you have the budget for an early zed in a private sale which would really make much more sense, I've rebuilt a fair few motorbikes into track bikes with cat d's and yes sometimes the damage is so minimal you wonder why it was written off, approach the car with skepticism and caution but as you say cat d is essentially cosmetic, you will have a very difficult to sell on car, ebay auction is about the only way you will shift it ball is in your court chap, maybe post up a link to the car and we can cast a critical eye over it, how much is it incidentally?

Have to say at that price I can see the attraction, not far from me either, if OP would like me to have a look at it for/with him I'd be happy to help
