HELP - Broken down and contents stuck in the boot

I've been private messaged details on how to open the boot from a kind chap on E89Post.... but asked not to repeat or post it for obvious security concerns. Will be interesting to see if that's how the garage managed it. Probably the same method suggested above.
Away to collect my contents in half an hour.
How did you get on with fixing your car? Just interested to see how this progressed...

The question that needs an answer is can the boot be opened without power.
In the US reaching through the ski port and pulling the emergency handle can open the boot, but do the locking latches need power to open.
One hopes that power at least can be attached to engine bay points, if the cabin doors can be opened.

Rather than fitting an actuator to simulate the pull handle, it could be possible to run extra wires to the boot solenoid and drive it directly from an external supply as a future emergency back up.

The boot can be opened using the engine bay points, I accidentally closed the boot while the battery was disconnected. Once hooked up with jump leads, it allows enough power to use the key fob to open the doors and the boot. Luckily I could access the bonnet release

Being a muppet whilst changing batteries did the samae thing battery on jumper leads and voila!..phew..

the OP had an electrical problem that meant whilst the battery was fine there was no power to the boot... rather annoying to say the least! :o

isnt that for closing the hardtop if you can open the boot?

And what precisely does "closing" mean? stowing or putting it back up!

Here you go “jbe component activation system” is where it’s at :?

It seems the US cars have an emergency bowden cable to open an electrically malfunctioning boot, i don’t know how hard this would be to retrofit/source the parts? :?
Rob

OK, so being at work and unable to check further, what then is the luminous green button on the right rear side of my E89's boot? Is this not the release?

I know that horrible sinking feeling! especially as big grey clouds were appearing overhead and I could feel the first small drops of rain... the roof was down and being an auto I couldn't push it back into the garage... a small victory dance was required! :roundel:

Hi, I’ve not noticed a green button on my e89, is this inside the boot somewhere? :?
Rob

Just braved the elements to have a look, it’s a manual fuel flap release
A similar thing for an electrically crippled boot could be a handy thing :?

Thanks chaps.
Should have known really, but away from the car and couldn't remember what it did.
As you say, something similar for the boot would be a bonus.

Well, have a look at the following two stories:

1) Emergency release in the trunk

2) Release to get the flap to the trunc opened from inside of the car
https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=de&sl=de&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.zroadster.com%2Fforum%2Findex.php%3Fthreads%2Fz4-3-0i-schalter-zur-kofferraum%25C3%25B6ffnung-fehlt.120577%2Fpage-3%23post-2752767

Well, Google Translate doesn't deliver the best translation, but it's worth to read.
I read through those links. Unfortunately a lot of work to get something that would have been nice to have from the factory (emergency boot release) but never mind.
What I did notice also, was a few references to people not being able to open the boot with the engine running and car unlocked (car in normal condition, no faults). Is this a thing in Germany, because I just tested it in my (Japanese import) 35i and had no problem opening the boot with the engine running, from the button inside the cabin by the driver's foot, and from the outside using the BMW logo/lever?
I've also not heard any of the UK (or US) forum members mention this issue on this forum to my knowledge.
I wonder if it is to prevent you from driving away with the boot unlatched?

Interesting, so perhaps it's linked to whether your car autolocks when you drive off, and/or whether you have the key fob coded so that one click unlocks the driver's door, two clicks unlocks all doors/boot (and possibly fuel cap?). I have neither of those setup on my car. One click unlocks everything, and I disabled the autolocking doors.

Same set up as my car, got on my nerves having additional clicks to let in a passenger

Sorry for the delayed response, just back from holiday.

Car is sorted, final bill was £1100 :( :(

Basically both modules in the boot were damaged by water, the roof module and rear brake module. Both replaced and working fine. Need to take a look at the water leak issue in the next few weeks once I've moved house. At least I'll have a garage again from next week :)

ouch! Not something nice to pay after shelling out on a holiday too. Glad you have it all sorted now.

I wonder if my BMW warranty would cover water leaks... time to read the small print!

I think a lot of warranties exclude water damage :o

Yeah, I think damaged caused by a seal failing probably excludes this damage, even though its arguably the manufacturer's fault in the first place
