HELP - Broken down and contents stuck in the boot

Morning guys,

Terrible start to the morning as I'm meant to be travelling with work...

Started Z4 (2010 30i) this morning, servicing light comes on, thought that's odd.

Drove 100 metres and all the warning lights came on then went off and kept cycling like this. Then the speedo, rev coutner stopped working and again cycled like this... Now no electrics are working with the exception of the headlights and windows. Electric steering isn't even working.

Now I could take the X5, but all my contents are stuck in the boot :( Tried using the key to release the central locking but no luck.

Any suggestions?? Z4 Manual is in the boot too, not very clever!

You have to think that with the cold weather we have this week that the battery is maybe on its way out and affecting the electrics.
Cant help with how to get into the boot though. Possibly jump leads on to see if a bit of extra power will let you open the boot.

Sadly there isn't a key option on the boot of an E89, somewhat a design flaw.

AA on route.

I'd go down the battery route. get some jump leads on as previously said and it'll probably come back to life!

Thanks guys.

Waiting for the AA.

Car starts and runs fine.... So think it may be one of those modules in the boot... Can hear weird clicking noises when I turn the car off. Water damage probably...

Not what I meant - on mine, the bottom button on the key releases the boot...

car will start with low battery, but does wieird things! Fingers crossed its something simple

Ah with you, good idea, but central locking isn't working at all. No response to that button being pressed.

Battery is good, 14.8 volts

Car with the garage, but fail to see how they'll get into the boot. Somewhat of a design flaw.

My laptop, wallet, passport etc is all stuck in the boot!

Unfortunately I can't see anything obvious on here on the web about how to do it manually (lots of flat batteries but not "stuck")... there's no easy way into the boot from the cabin either that I am aware of, unless you have ski hatch?

When I was changing my seats over I accidentally closed the boot with the battery disconnected!, if you can access the bonnet release attach jump leads to the the terminal connector at the back of the engine (has a red plastic cover) and the negative to the bolt thingy on the o/s turret. Connect the leads to another battery/car.. won't give you power to to start but will give enough for the key remote to open all doors

No ski hatch.

Battery is fine, charge is full. Car starts and drives fine, just no electrics....

Been googling it but see no obvious answer.

Probably wouldn’t have helped in this case but you can have a Z4 manual on your phone. Download the BMW drivers guide app and follow the instructions to customise to your car

I know you said electrics aren't working, so I guess suggesting trying to open the roof will open the boot as part of the opening sequence won't work either?
But following the same thought, is there a way to open the roof manually? Would this also unlock the boot to lift it and get access? Can't say I've heard/seen this option though :(

Can't see anything on the web about a manual option, except in the US where there appears to be some sort of handle...

No, I can't find anything on the web....

Spoke to my local BMW specialist I use from time to time, he said he may be able to release it from the diagnostic tool, but potentially not if the dash isn't working... Will take it to him tonight if local garage can't fix it.

uh oh  ... sounding expensive! hope you get it fixed... and it will be interesting to hear the solution..

I hope so too, but highly doubt it. The way the days was flickering on and off is a worry, will definitely be linked to water ingress in the boot. I know it's been leaking but had been keeping an eye on it and mopping up every now and again.

Could cry right now. Supposed to be going to Nurburgring next Thurs
