Help and advice with my Z4 purchase please.

Gentlemen .....After deciding to selling my Z4 2.5 (177 bhp) in the spring of this year, I have continued to regret the decision. I have decided to start to find a replacement, and thought it wise to ask the forum for advice. I'm only looking for a 2.5 model (I'm the wrong side of 40 years old, so I'm only considering the more comfortable 'SE' model). My question is,relating to all vast information on this site regarding the cylinder head problems on these 6 cylinder cars. Is this a problem associated to a few cars, is the problem mileage/ production date, dependent ? I thought the engine in my previous 'Z' was superb. I try hard to maintain my cars, but really don't want to be facing a four figure repair bill in the near future. Your opinions please....

If you go for a pre-facelift car with the M54 engine, I don't think the cylinder head should be a worry. It's the N52 engine on facelift models that can have a problem. Have a read of this:

Not sure how widespread the N54 engine issues are. 2.5 and 3.0 litre post facelift cars have that engine.

If you are buying a pre-facelift car then 2.2, 2.5 or 3.0 litre seem pretty bullet proof 6 cylinder engines.

On any older car I'd seriously think about getting a warranty. £500 a year should get you a good one.
