Good evening all,

Newbie here with a few questions;

After 3 years of TT Coupe ownership I’m fancying a change. The Z4 I’m looking at is a 2.2i SE.

My sister used to have a 3.0 steptronic (with all the toys) and i absolutely loved it. The sound of the engine was superb.

Firstly I’d like to know (from all you 2.2i owners) what the performance is like? My TT is only 180bhp and is probably quite a lot heavier than the Z4 - so performance should be better.

Secondly, does anyone roughly know how much a 40k Service would be on a 53 plate 2.2 - The Z4 I’m looking at only has 3k miles to its next service and I don’t want to be stung with a major one. And what are the service intervals?

Finally, did the Z4 ever get a face lift which included lowered suspension?

I’m sure I’ll be back with plenty more questions but thanks in advance and I look forward to many more posts and (fingers crossed) ownership in the next few weeks.

Dan

Welcome  re the suspension i know some cars came with M.Sport suspension think it was only the 3.0 but could be wrong

Hello I'm probably the perfect person to speak to. I had a facelift 225 TTC for just over a year then changed to a merc for 6 months and two weeks ago I got a 2.2 Z4.

My Z4 is silver with red leather and the 18" 108 wheels (18s are a must :) ).

The Z4 is considerably lighter than the TT and I have found the 2.2 very competitive to the 225 so should be a nice change from your 180 TTC. I have found it is important to get the gearing correct as the Z4 can do 30 in 5th and I found yesterday I need to drop lower than I thought because of this illusion. I hope that makes some sense? :) Exceleration from 70mph in 5th is extremely impressive and you will be doing 100 before you know it!!

The Z4 sounds so much better and costs only £50 to fill up with super and gives me the same from a tank as the TT did. So I'm really impressed with the fuel side of things. The boot is also considerably larger and you can fit in suitcases with ease.

This is a lot coming from me because I was really anti BMW until I drove the Z4 and I would say in all honesty I prefer the Z4 to the TT a lot so far.

There is one downside and that is insurance! It costs me £1.5k a year which is more than the TT by a long way.

I would say just go and drive one and you will be impressed. Any other questions just ask! :D

Greetings,

Although I can't speak directly to the characteristics of the Z4 2.2i, I can speak as a former TT owner. After having had two roadsters, a '99 Z3 2.3 and an '01 TT 180, I can say that the Z4 is, in and of itself, an evolutionary leap. I say "evolutionary" because all of these cars remain loyal to their generations old heritage of raw, yet refined, sports motoring appeal.

I'm now in a 3.0si coupe. I loved the TT roadster and feel it was one of the better looking drop tops, but the TT coupe was that much more sculpted. And that's how I feel about the Z4 coupe. But the performance and handling should, as you will see, impress. And the fuel economy isn't too shabby in the 3.0, so I assume the 2.2 is al least as kind, if not a wee bit kinder on the wallet.

Oddly, my insurance has gone down a few dollars with the Z4... In part because it's so incredibly safe (or so my agent said).

I'm certain someone can answer your service question in regards to that engine and trim. If not here, I'm certain a deal could let you know.

Best of luck with the Z4 and happy motoring!

Cheers.

I have a silver 2.2 and am more than happy with it. I have put 18' wheels on it which massively improves its stance, I have also ditched the run flats which also make the whole driving experience better.

On a motorway run, if I feel in a sensible mood, I can potter along at 70/80 and average between 38 and 40mpg. I can also overtake in most circumstances and don't feel underpowered, even though the car clearly wont keep up with the 3.0.

I think most people would agree anyway that the most fun to be had in the zed is on a twisty a road with the roof down, not hammering the motorways at 100mph, so that extra bit of power is not really missed. Just my view anyway.

Also, it is quite good to own one of the rarer models, and don't forget, since the 2.0 came out, it isn't the base model. I also had mine debadged which cleans the lines and if you feel the need, masks the fact it it not a bigger engine.

Horses for courses, only get the car if you are comfortable with it or you'll always regret it which would be a shame.

I haven't reached my first major service yet, but the cost will depend on whether you take it to the dealer or find a specialist to do the work. I will be going to a local specialist from now on as I don't think I will get the value from a dealer stamp on a 4 year ol car (there is a topic on this somewhere if you search the main board)

Good luck

Some good information there guys, thanks.

Does anyone have pictures of a light blue Z4?

I've seen one in the trader that i like the look of but the pictures are pretty plain.

Cheers

Dan

There was a blue one in my works car park today, looked good but I prefer my silver  :P

Whats the details of the one your looking at?

i know what you mean, i love the silver.

This blue looks nice though.

2003, 2.5i, 19,000 miles and advertised at 11k

Yeah, although im still not 100% sure about the colour or interior.

The spec is perfect though.

I have a 2.2 and love it- sterling grey, elipsoid wheels (same as the model you are looking at) and M seats. The maldives blue car you are seeing looks good but you need to see it in the flesh as I loved the blue until I saw one and then wasnt so keen- not to say it is a bad colour, just not my cu of tea.
As for the TT thing- my mate has a 225 (a lot faster than your 180) and in real world terms it isn't that much faster than mine! All to down to personal choice- but find the car you love and buy it at any cost! happy motoring! let us know what happens :driving:

I've not driven a 2.2 but I read a write up years back which rated it as the best model. Best to do a thorough check of t'internet like Autotrader to see what's about I'd have thought.

Have only driven a TT Coupe and the Z4 is much more alive, like a sports car imho.

Good luck

Well, i've gone and put a deposit down on a grey 2.2 SE with 40,000 miles on the clock.

Its in lovely condition and i cant wait to pick it up on Saturday :D

Sad to see the TT go but i've had it for three years and i want a change (for the better)

I'll post some pictures as soon as i've had a play.

You've made the right decision!! Will be a long week for you then :D

I'm sure you will be happy with the Z I adore mine and I do think its a better car than the TT.

Get those pictures up! What colour combination did you go for?
