Hello all ,

Well after enjoying 16 years of trouble free motoring on my UK DC2 Integra Type R , ive had to let her go. It probably hasnt got much kudos here but honestly it was a superb drivers car.

As a fellow petrolhead i was gutted but it was inevitable.

Ive got a nice German ( will keep manufacturer name shh lol) saloon which looks after the family journeys etc jobs but ive been really scratching my head as to what to get as a replacement for the Integra.

Fiat 500 Abarth? Like its lightweight/ relatively high bhp ratio.

But its the Z4 ( straight 6 , naturally aspirated 2.5 engines) E85? that im drawn to.

Yes they will be older high mileage examples but it will only do 30 miles a week plus additional 30 during the summer on my fave twisty A and B roads.

Anyway that sums me up, be kind :)

Regards Major

Hi, most owners will tell you to consider the 3.0 as it’s no dearer to run than the 2.5, there’s a classified section to peruse on here as well

Cheers Rob,

The additional bhp of the 3 litre is tempting indeed.

Done research on the internet and YouTube and these cars seem pretty damn solid and reliable ( as long as like any car they've been serviced ).

Will have a nosey at the classifieds.
 Major

Dont be shy about your past or current motors, most here appreciate other badges ,and certainly great models like the type Rs
Welcome to the forum and good luck in your search :driving: :driving:

Hi and welcome to the forum.

As much as I am a serial BMW owner (I just like RWD) I can appreciate that an Integra Type R is a pretty special car by any standards. If you have any photos of yours I'm sure we'd appreciate seeing them!

Anyway so far as Z4s go there was a facelift in early 2006 when the 6 cylinder engines were replaced with a newer generation of engine (N52 instead of M54) that is a bit more powerful, and that is when the E86 Coupe came along (only available with the 3.0 litre engine, or the M).

As Rob has already said you might as well get the 3 litre, because in both cases it is the same engine as the 2.5 just a different size. So running costs are the same, even down to the tax band!

Happy hunting.

(And if you fancy a 3 litre Coupe mine is for sale).

Thanks for the welcome and information Mr Tidy.

The Integra was a lovely car, even at 190k miles the engine, gearbox and mechanicals were spot on. It unfortunately succumbed to the 90s Japanese cars rust issues ( the type thats underneath and not visible to the eye).

Not sure if the link below works but that was it in Nov 18.

Im already browsing the classifieds and on the hunt

Cheers for the welcome Sw4nny,

Ive attempted to post a link to my integra in the reply to Mr Tidy.

Welcome, have raced against the type R and they are not slow. Go for a 3.0 if you can for all the reasons fellow posters have stated. Very happy with my car, it isn’t the rev bunny that the Honda is but enjoy the smooth power delivery of these engines and General great driving experience. They handle pretty well as they come.

Firstly thank you all for the warm welcomes :), you can always get a feel for a good friendly car forum ( some can be full of muppets).

Just seen this on autotrader , i know its the smaller engine but im after a more sedate car experience

I just found a great car on Auto Trader.

Download the app to find your perfect car.

Looks like an honest car.

What kinda budget are you looking at? I'll soon be selling my perfectly serviceable, but high mileage 2003 3.0i for cheap quite soon, if that kinda thing might interest you?

That looks great.

Such a shame about the rust, but I suppose it isn't economic to get it fixed. :(

Just so you know there were two 2.5s after the facelift. The 2.5i (like the one in your linked advert) with 177 bhp and the 2.5Si with 218 bhp so you might want to take that into account in your search.

Although not a screamer like a Type R, the facelifts do have a 7,000 rpm red-line which should appeal!

It would have cost a fortune to really get the rust properly sorted and im praying that Z4s are less prone to it.

After a screaming engine im looking forward to a more sedate, more refined engine, hence why i would be content with the 177bhp version.

The car im going to view ( in the link) looks honest enough

1) numerous owners, which even the teg had, it happens with these 'weekend ', second fun cars

Things im going to check are

1) every detail of service history
2) bodywork, boot, hood, dampness anywhere
3) suspension ie springs, ride, road behaviour,
4) power delivery, hesitation, smoothness of delivery
5)coolant system service
6)gearbox feel
7) evidence of brake pipe replacement as the earlier mots suggested it went from advisory to fail
8) gut feel

If it ticks all the boxes then job done, Mrs says im rushing to replace the hole that the Integra left, she has a point ,but i need that second fun car on driveway back.

That makes sense. I haven't read of any rust issues on Z4s, apart from the brake pipes! My 2006 Coupe had the rear ones replaced in copper in 2016 - after 3 advisories!

Although the N52 engines have a fairly high rev-limit for a straight 6 they make peak torque quite low down (2,500 rpm for the 3 litre) so although you can rev it out, you don't need to.

Multiple owners is quite common - my 3.0Si Coupe had 5 before me, my M Coupe had 7! But as you say that isn't unusual for a 2nd/fun car.

Check the hood lowers and raises properly as BMW put the roof motor under the roof drain, so it often gets drowned! Getting a new one fitted costs in the region of £1,000, but there are a few people on here who can resurrect motors and relocate them into the boot where they stay dry for around £200.

Cheers Firebobby

After more reading both here and the internet im reaching a conclusion that the pre 2007 ( n52) engines are pretty bombproof.

Aside from any vanos issues, they seem solid.

Disa valve is less prone to failure.

Water pump is just one of those wear and tear items.

Timing chain, no issues. Should i budget to get this replaced as a belt and braces approach. Im( well the garage) so used to changing the timing belts that a 'lifetime ' one seems a bit freaky to me.
