Hi guys and gals, I've had a look through the website and already picked up some good information, so thanks for that :)

Basically I'm a 30yr old guy whose decided to get a Z4 after hours of scrolling through car adds and humming and harring what to get and ive decided on a Z4.

im now going to have a more detailed look through some of the threads to do some research, in the meantime any advice on what engines or specs/mods are good/bad and what to look out for would be great!

my budget is 6k-10k depending on how much more car for the money is involved.

im looking for a 2.5ltr, white Z4 (any opinions on engines/colours etc welcome)

thanks in advance and sorry for any newbie questions i will no doubt be asking in the near future :)

hey jonny!

yea the more i look the more i realise its gonna be a bugger to find a white 1 for decent money :(

looks like i need to have a think about colours :)

reading on here theres a big performance increase in the 2.5 to 3.0 ...... but whats the running costs like, i.e does it drink a hell of a lot more etc? (this will be my day to day drive so has to be reasonable)

thanks

Hi and welcome Jingle , I would go for a 3L as you won't be disappointed and there isn't much difference in fuel economy either.

GLWTS

am i right in thinking there are 5 engine size?

2.0
2.2
2.5
3.0
3.2

any pros or cons for each size?

Hi Jingle. Welcome along.

Yep those are the engine options available. The 3.0, especially si in the later models is really economical for the power by any standards. The running costs between the 3.0 and the 2.5 are apparently negligible, I had the 3.0si and it was amazing. 36mpg on a long mixed trip easily. Daily commute of A roads used to be around 32mpg. Service costs between the lot are sinlar, but obviously the 2.0l being a 4-pot is cheaper with having fewer plugs to change and less oil etc.

Great cars. As Jonny says though, to find a white one will be a task.

Edit .... If you see the perfect car in a 2.5si guise - then I can't see why you would have any regrets getting that! Similar performance to the 3.0 without getting too picky.

Thanks Tom!

all helping so far!

looks like i need to start narrowing my search for a 2.5si or 3.0. and its handy to know the service costs etc are similar as that was also a consideration.

just out of curiosity is the 2.0 engine that much worse/sluggish?

thanks

If you can afford to go bigger than the 2.0 then I would. I've been in 3 series cars with the same/similar engine and it is fine. Just doesn't have the sound of the straight 6 engines - which is just so nice to listen to at any speed! Also the other reason is that reading through posts on here - a relatively large number of 2.0 owners seem to suffer from similar problems - engine management lights / emission lights / common manifold failures. 2.0 is hardly a small engine so I'm sure they pull fine, but those things would worry me.

yea my budget can stretch to around 10k at a big stretch but i would have to be seriously happy with what im buying for that price!

and yea thats tomorrows mission at work...... check this forum for common faults etc to look out for, ive read that a lot of roof motors go wrong and are expensive to repair/replace but think i also read its less of a problem on later models?

time to swat up i think haha

thanks for being so welcoming guys and helping me find my feet, like i say im sure ill have plenty of questions over the next few weeks so please bare with any newbie questions i have haha

1st on my agenda is try and research as much as possible tomorrow to save extra questions :) wish me luck haha

Have a good read up & try and drive a few with different engine sizes, my 3.0si is the first 6cyl car I've owned-they really are a peach of an engine :driving:

yea been looking at that 1 for a little while, there was a nice 1 up for 9,995 but was gone after a few days :(

i need to hurry up and research what engine/spec im after to make my hunt easier and more precise :D

is alpine white the only white available? (other white made no mention of it being alpine or rare white unlike that 1 does)

thanks

I was wary of the fuel consumption of the 3litre but there was no need to panic, driving carefully I can get high 30's to the gallon (35/36 commuting & 37/38 on a motorway run)
Regards

Hi pal, I have a 2.5i E85 and drive from Costessey to dereham everyday for work. Fuel isn't as bad as I thought it'd be. My other car (320d touring) obviously is better. However I've averaged over 2000 miles since I've had it about 29mpg, and I've not been driving miss daisy! I sometimes think what if I'd gone for the 3.0, it really doesn't bother me that much, the 2.5 is a great drive and lots of noise, and I've had nothing done to the engine or exhaust.
Thoroughly enjoyable with the roof down. I used to really miss my mk4 golf 1.8t gti, but since buying this I haven't looked back!
