Hello from Newbie

Sounds like a very pleasurable buying experience - thank for telling us about it. I still get that buzz you're describing - and the 'glance back' after parking up. Looking forward to more of your contributions in the future

Just seen this post Ben.

Thanks for posting that, means a lot after Ballzdeep's character assassination attempt on me. Funny how two people can get such a different perception but then again, you've actually met me. All he did was ask me questions for 20 odd minutes.

Sorry to hear about the brake light bulb. Didn't replace a bulb in the 2yrs and 7 months of my ownership. Sod's Law or maybe she just didn't like being given away and threw a strop :D ...just like she did to me when I had a minor drama myself on the first day of ownership.

Hope the car is working out well.

Lovely story and glad to see the Z kept within the community!

Yes, interesting to see the two different experiences between bemo and Ballzdeep.

No worries Ben, thought it warranted a counter experience... Haha, sounds like she takes a bit of time to warm to a new owner! I can confirm however that the bulbs were original, 10 years and 80k isn't bad going. (Had an 2005 manufacture date stamp on)

She's currently residing in my garage back home, as I said I work away during the week. I had some fun last weekend around some of the better roads near where I live, (Hartside Pass, dipping into the North East and then back through Kendal/South Lakes for anyone that is familiar with that region) before I stuck a SORN on her for a few weeks whilst I sort some things out.

Did a few small jobs on Sunday, mainly a good clean, as my 1000 miles in a week had accumulated a fair amount of salt. I also cleaned and treated the roof. I stuck her up on a lift and had a good poke around underneath (including checking the roof drains, they were fine!) there is some slight play in the rear of the front lower wishbone bushes so I've ordered some Meyle HD replacements, wasn't so bad that it needed doing, but it's certainly going to do no harm, this may be what was causing the slight vibration under braking that Ben mentioned. Also had the brakes apart, which seem fine, and true to Ben's word, I needent have as they must have just been apart as all the copper grease was still fresh and the pistons were very free.

There was a slight mist of oil on the diff, so I've also ordered both oil seals, and I'll change the diff oil while I'm in there sorting that out. Nothing major, and to be honest I think most would just leave all of the above until it gets worse, but I'm quite OCD with my cars so doing it for piece of mind more than anything else!

Not much else planned work wise, will order some Gliptone Liquid Leather and give the seats a bit of a refresh although the passenger one looks brand new, and try and see if I can fix the driver side illuminated kick plate.

Still smitten with the car and I can't wait to get back to driving her :driving:

Good work that man!!!

Will be interested to know if it is the play that caused the occasional vibration. If the vibration IS still there it might explain it given that the brakes have been serviced.

Regarding the kick plate, I think it requires a replacement. It's easy to pop off so I had a look myself. The wires had been cut before so I took the tape off and put a multimeter on them. Power is getting to the strip but as you can see, there's no life.

I couldn't see any reasonable way of taking the strip apart so I left it at that.

Any plans with the wheels? Refurb/colour etc?

Well done OP!

That is a mammoth trip, but worth it to get what you really want. Makes my trip to Portsmouth from Sandhurst on the train look a doddle; actually it was quite entertaining as I did it the day before the Isle of Wight festival so my fellow passengers were in "good spirits" let's say!

Z4s just seem to get under your skin - 18+ months later I still always look back at mine when I have parked it (usually just in time to see some tw*t in a shagged-out Transit/Land Rover/Galaxy, etc. parking inches away from it)!

Cheers Ben, will keep either this thread or another updated once I've done some more investigation, but the brakes did seem fine. If the bushes don't sort it I'll look into replacing the discs/pads. Thanks for the info regarding the kick-plate, saved me a few hours taking it to bits! I think that case I'll just leave it as is.

With regard to the wheels, I will look into a refurb (open to recommendations from the forum) I like the standard colours etc, especially the turned finish on the rim so was thinking either refurb as they came out the factory or a slight grey tinge to the centre. I also really like the Apex Arc 8 wheel, but not sure where to buy in the UK and was going to keep an eye on the Z4 related good thread to see if any pop up when people change cars.

Mr Tidy, (and other posters!) thanks for all the nice comments, I think I may have seen your car on some Pistonheads threads, if you are the same guy.... Looks good anyway.
