...and almost a new Z4 owner!

All being well I'll be able to pick my new Z4 up (new to me at least, 2005 to the rest of you :) ) in a few days time. Sadly I had a call from the dealer earlier saying there's a problem with it starting, hence I haven't got it yet. Still, all being well that should be sorted out soon, and at their expense, not mine ;)

It's a 2.0 SE Roadster in black with red leather interior, and it looks gorgeous. It'll look even better once it's on my driveway of course!

So from reading through various bits of the forum, I've already started to make a list of stuff to do to it, including:

  • Adding cruise control
  • Adding the one touch roof operation (not quite sure yet if I do this with the add-on module, or if I can get it "good enough" with some key programming...)
  • Update the radio, possibly to a sat-nav unit
  • Depending on what I do with the radio, update the steering wheel to multi-function controls
  • Decide what I do about run flat tyres/puncture gunk/spare wheel
  • Add the cup holders (I see mixed reviews about them on here, but I think I'd prefer them to the third-party cup holders. And I prefer to have all blanks on the dashboard fully populated :) )
  • Check the soft top drain holes around the motor (as the thought of having to replace the motor due to corrosion sounds scarily expensive!)
  • Remove the orange from the indicator area in the headlamps (that may have to wait a while, until I find the bottle to cup open the existing lights...)
  • Add parking sensors (at the missus's request!)

Anything else I should be thinking of doing?

I'm sure as I get into driving it, and doing stuff to it, I'll be asking the advice of all you knowledgeable people.

Oh, and as I haven't got it yet, I can't post any pictures yet, and it's no longer on the dealer's website to get pictures from there. I'll post some when I can!

Cheers,
Andy B

Hi Andy

Interested in your comment about "one touch roof operation" didn't know this was possible, would love to know how to do it.

welcome along and congrats on the purchase

you missed mention of a stubby
Thanks gannet - I assume you mean stubby aerial? That'll depend on what I do with the rest of the ICE, as I also want DAB in there in some form (be it in the head unit directly, or a separate DAB tuner, like the Pure Highway unit). I'll need to investigate what aerials are good for digital reception, but I'll put it on my list :)

This isn't the exact thread I read, but this thread here talks about the Reinhold unit that allows this - there's two parts they do...the first allows a one touch operation from inside the car, and the other part allows control from the remote. This is what I'm unsure about at the moment, as it seems like you can get some of this control from the remote if you get it reprogrammed. More investigation/deliberation to follow... ;)

hello, hope you get into your new car sooner rather than later :)
if its not to personal a question could i ask roughly how much you paid for your z.

Hi Sean - I hope I get it soon as well! I'd originally thought it would be this week, but that's looking unlikely now.

I got the car for about £9800, less part exchange brought it to a round £9000.
I saw a 2.2 SE a year older (04) about a grand less, but that was a private sale, and I felt more comfortable getting this through a dealer, as it comes with a 3 month warranty so I'm a bit more covered to start with. Plus this had less mileage on it, and it should be a little easier on the wallet to run and maintain it, as it'll be my main car for commuting.

Hi and welcome Andy :)

When I bought mine didn't have any plans on mod's but after 4 months have done a few ;)
Good luck with yours.

Welcome Andy - looks like you have a new pet project! :)
Yep, I don't think SWMBO quite realises this yet :D She's intending my next project to be decorating the lounge and dining room!

Welcome Andy :driving:

I have the remote version of the Reinhold module,
There are actually two variants,
Remote operation. - allows you to open the roof with 3 presses of the door unlock button on keyfob, and closes it with 3 presses on the lock button of keyfob.

One touch operation. - allows you to use the inside buttons on the centre console, but you only have to hold the relevant button for 1 second to open or close. you do not have to hold it throughout the operation as before.

Incidentally, the keyfob can be programmed by an indy, (I had mine done for £20) but you have to stand by the car holding the open or close button for the whole operation. You may as well put the key in the door and do it.
I fitted the remote version and I just press my keyfob close 3 times as I walk away, or open 3 times as I approach and carry on loading boot or just getting in the car as it completes.
I dont use the inside buttons now unless I am driving and it starts to rain

There is another module that allows you to open/close at speeds up to 50kmh without having to slow to a stop, but I don't think that is a Reinhold variant.

hi and welcome.

Interesting you say you want to remove the orange from the headlights as a 2.0 is a facelift with clear lenses!

I have the reinhold one touch.. but have yet to install it.. i do quite often use the key to open/ close the roof which i got the key reprogrammed... to do. just have to holdthe button.

Interesting point that if you have the remote module, you don't really use the buttons in the car. If you're in the car with it running, can you still close the roof from the remote 3-click close?

I like the idea of the ability to close the roof when moving slowly as well - a mate has an MX5 who had something similar fitted, as it drove him nuts having to stop completely to do the roof, especially when the lights changed with a queue of cars behind him :)

Of course I still need the car first...getting twitchy now, as I just want to get in it and drive!

This one definitely has the orange indicators in the headlights - a 2005 2.0SE...when was the facelift for this version?

No. if the key is 'turned' in the ignition, (even ignition lights only) it does not allow remote operation. In fact if you have started the operation remotely and put the key in and turn it it will stop the sequence midway,,
The dash buttons would have to be used if the car is running. Only if the key is in your hand can you use the remote function,

2006 I believe was facelift year. I saw a '55 plated 2.0 with orange indicators on my ride home last night, same as my '07 apart from front and rear light clusters.
