Have a 2014 Z4 28i E89. It sat for too long and the battery became weak. I should have used a tender but hindsight is 20/20. Trunk is locked. Interior release button not working as well as key fob (which has a new battery) will not release trunk even when I use a jump box to obtain constant 12.5 V at under hood terminals. At the same time I notice a red fast blinking LED for the top. Use my Z BMW scanner (Creator C140) to clear codes but it will not enter the CVM (conv top module). I use AI and it tells me to remove the chassis ground strap, which I do to try to reboot the CVM. Reattach and still CVM locked out. So my trunk is locked with a dead battery in the trunk because my CVM is locked or dead which kills the trunk latch (So AI says) from getting an electrical signal to open. My BMW mechanic is very busy and can only get a late February 2026 appointment. Now the car will not start even with a jumper and charger. Getting 5.5 volts from the dead trunk battery. I am out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I could get in the trunk I could at least change the battery myself and drive the car until I get the CVM checked in late February. Thanks for your time in reading this and any suggestions you may have..

I'll defer to the more knowledgeable, but is it worth buying a new battery and hooking it up to the terminals beneath the bonnet?

Get the engine running, keep the battery connected and try the roof/ boot then?

I would say not to mess with the grounding of the CVM unless you know what you are doing. You could break it.
