Hello and Help!!

Hi Guys, Ive just become the proud owner of a Black 2007 2.0 Z4, red leather with 36,000 miles and a fsh, I bought it privately from a woman who had owned it for the last 4 years, picked it up last Tuesday and have been smiling ever since....that is until this morning when after driving round with the roof down (despite it not being a particularly warm day!) I arrived home and found that the roof wouldn't go back up! :-( The motor whirrs for a minute and then nothing, being a Z4 virgin I had no idea how to manually retract the roof so after reading the owners manual I located the red handle and got the roof back up, I then tried the switch again and it managed to work long enough to lock the roof back into place...when trying to retract it again the motor works long enough for it to unlock from the windscreen frame but then cuts out....Before buying a Z4 I did quite a lot of research and it took me almost 6 months to find the one I wanted so I do know that there has been quite a few problems regarding the roof motors on the Z4 but wondered if this sounds like its a case of a new motor or could it possibly be something else?!? If it is the worst case scenario does anyone have any idea how much im looking at to get it done? and also any recommendations to where I should get it done (I live in the SouthEast)
Aside from this mornings trauma (and trust me I was close to tears!!) im loving the way the car drives and handles and yesterday on the motorway it was showing me I was doing 45MPG! AMAZING!!
Thank you in advance for any hints, tips or ideas that people from this great forum might be able to offer.

Oh dear - sorry to hear of your problem, but that does indeed sound like a roof motor.

Have you no recourse with the place you purchased it?

Cant find it sorry  been keeping an eye on this if mine ever goes looks like around £700 is the norm to get it replace i think a replacement motor is about 300 odd.

Found it not sure if its anywhere near you tho http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=64328&p=951863&hilit=roof+motor#p951863

Thanks again Dan,Topguy.........might with worth the trip up there as it seems a very good price :)

Hi Willie,
Sorry to hear of your problem, sounds like she knew there was an issue, difficult to prove though. Anyway, it was me who had their roof repaired in Norwich for £553, I'm in Cromer so only 20 odd miles away, not sure where you are exactly but as far as I am aware this is the cheapest price around by an independent. I was very happy with the service and the price, hope you get it sorted!

You do have some rights here.

Whilst the seller has no legal obligation to tell you of any faults, it has to be as described. If you have an advert that suggests that everything is fine with the car then consider taking legal advice.

HI Mickey....Im thinking that maybe she did know (although are there any symptoms that the motor is on its way out?) Im in London but would happily take a trip to Norwich to get it sorted! ...do you know if using the hood manually causes it any damage??....aside from todays little blip im LOVING the Z4 experience!!! :)

Hiya Budfox........thanks for yr post, when I test drove the car the hood worked fine and up till this morning ive had no problems at all, I was thinking that it was just bad luck/timing on my part, Im guessing it would be VERY hard to prove that she was aware that there was a problem prior to selling it

I did notice that the roof was getting a bit sluggish for a week or so before it died totally. I did try to get it down manually but could only open it a couple of feet or so but didn't force it for fear of causing damage. As it turned out the garage who fixed it told me they couldn't release it manually as it was seized so good job I didn't force it. However, lots of people on here have pulled the red handle in the boot to release it manually without any problem.

I'd get your usual garage to check it out and confirm the motor is the issue though.

Cheers Mickey, I guess the good thing is that the roof seems to go up and down quite easily by hand....definitely not as cool though!! Will give the guys you used a ring next week after ive had it checked out by my local garage....another question, can anyone recommend a good wind deflector? mine doesn't have one and ive seen quite a few different types that are available...didn't really want one that involved any kind of drilling though!
Thanks again mate

that type of wind deflector doesn't need drilling. No experience of one myself though...

Thanks Dan  although with my roof problem the only wind im getting is from the Missus telling that I should never have bought the car and im having a mid-life crisis!!

Haha, I know that feeling - tell your wife that at least for your "mid-life crisis" you decided to go with the sports car option and not a 21 year old stripper/au pair/nanny :-)
