Ok. One service, pair of front arm bushes and a new set of non runflat tyres later, the car is running like a dream although I think I will get the wheels aligned as well.
Dealer is rectifying the central locking issue.
Now to save up for an alloy refurb!

Thanks to all for the advice. One happy z4 ownrt now.

Good to hear brownie - nice one

I recently got an E85 3.0si which scared me on a particular stretch of road I use regularly. The previous owner had just put a new set of Vreds on it but was running them 4-5 psi below recommendation. Sorted that - That improved things enormously, but, on this stretch it still pulls and drags across the contours in the road where my Landy hardly feels a ripple and drives right through the variations. Everywhere else it is just fine. Part of it might just be the difference between rwd compared to what is essentially fwd.

I run my E85 3.0si on Vreds. Have none of these problems. What psi do you set your fronts and rears to?

I think it was 34 front and 36 rear respectively - I set them to whatever the recommendation was as a starting point. They were set to 29 when I got the car.
It feels fine in other circumstances - its just where theres a ripple in the tarmac, especially out of bends. I'll have to take my wife E89 down that stretch of road to see how that handles.

If it's not the runflats, you could have worn front control arm bushes. Mine were shot and as soon as the car got unsettled it started wobbling all over the place, especially on the motorway where it "swam" whilst tramlining and was very unsettled under braking.

I had exactly the same on mine - getting the control arm bushes changed made a world of difference! But worn bushes probably wouldn't necessarily be a fail on an MOT.

It could still be better but it is on Bridgestone RFLs (as they were nearly new when I got it). Will definitely get something else when it needs tyres - still unsure whether to try a better brand of RFL or ditch the runflats as I like the RFL concept.............. :?
