ill try this one again now ive calmed down, had a G&T and had a poke. the roof has been fine and used daily for weeks now. its always sounded fine and has not been clunky at all.

the roof was stuck at the nearly closed position. it was the final bit where the locking mechanism engages. the red light was flashing. the motor was dead and not working.

i checked out the microswitch for the roof tray and it is fine and engaged so the roof should work. i didnt electrically test it just it had not fallen off or anything.

i then pulled the red cord which is very stiff and only moves about an inch and dropped the roof manually. in the open position it was not locked down. red light still flashing

i then released the red cord. pressed the open button. the roof motor whirred and completd the opening cycle. locked the roof open and put the windows up. red light ha gone out.

i then tired to close the roof. it whirred as if there was an electric motor that should actuate something but was fee to spin. then the hydraulic kicked in and the roof went up level with the roll hoops and stop. Red light blinked away. the open button would then reset the roof back to fully open, actuate the windows and make the normal noises it always did. if you tried to close the same happened over and over. whir, hydraulic motor, stop, red light blink, close fine.

i then maunally shut the roof from the locked open position. so pulled the cord. pressed the release button by the cubby. lifted the roof. i had to manually unwind the the locking tabs as they were locked position. then i wound them back so the roof was locked shut. the red light was blinking away.

i the reset the red cord. the red light continued to blink. and the buttons were totally unresponsive.

i then. opened the roof manually again. so pulled the cord. wound the locks so they are open. opened the roof. red light is still blinking, roof is totally open but not locked open.

i then reset the red cord. the open button finishes the roof opening sequence. it is the same as before. makes a whirring that seems to do nothing for a few secs, lifts the roof to about roll bar height and stops. you cna use the button to then open the roof where it opens, locks the roof open and does the usual noises.


so this is a lot of stuff sorry for the long post,

any ideas whats up? any idea how to reset the chuffer? damn typical on the nicest days of the year.
 
so been and had another poke. the initial whirring is the roof hook locks opening. its as if it gets to a point and hits an interloc that kills it.

when up and locked shut the red light flashes as if it thinks its not shut. is there some sort of microswitch that says if its shut or open?

anyone got the shipkiller page that explains how to get the roof off?
 
The red bowden handle is the manual over-ride for the hydraulic system that allows the roof to be moved up/down without using the motor. You pull it, then twist it to 'set' it in manual mode as it were.

I'm in the position of having my roof motor drowned in the torrential downpour last weekend; worked perfectly before one damn heavy shower and nothing and I check/clear the roof drains monthly. Still at least if I sort it out in the next couple of weeks it will be done properly not the bodge job that the BMW factory did first time round.

As the person above has said - the bowden cable is the red handle you give about a quarter turn to get the roof moving - sounds as if you've found this already. Just an FYI - you don't need to re-engage this to get the latching mechanism to work. When my roof motor was broken, i left it disengaged, used the usual open/close buttons to latch/unlatch the roof and then pushed/pulled it up/down manually.

Not sure if this is a roof motor or not, inclined to say it is given that it's the most common issue, but it's a bit odd that it regularly goes back up to the same point before giving up.
 
I have the same problem ie roof won't go up,it started to play up a couple of weeks ago.it worked intermittently then gave up the ghost and would not close.
I took it to Autotech Performance were Peter diagnosed the roof motor.
We managed to close the roof which was not easy due to the manual override not working due to a sticking valve.
New motor to be fitted next week.
I had to drive home in blazing sun with the roof up :cry:
 
i spoke to a great guy in a company in bradford about this today, after i described stuff they were not sure that it was the motor and speculated that it could be the hall sensors on the roof. the guy had a z in having its roof motor done and tried to replicate my problems by disconnecting various sensors at different points but was not successful. what they didnt get was it wasnt showing any of the usual signs.

the roof just stops dead. i can use the buttons to make it go up and down and up and down a much as i like it just wont get past the point. its responsive etc and isnt intermittent. their only suggestion is to get it on their diganostics and see whats what so i guess ill have to do that. i dont know one anywhere around here that will do this so i guess im just going to have to pay for a raft of diagnostic testing and what not. :x first so its going to turn out costly i recon.
the sodding cat has just had to have an emergency vet appt wich cost £110 what next?
