Maybe it's a regional difference ? Maybe RHD exclusive? (I haven't seen pics of US cars with the 2nd cats)
My 2004 3.0i certainly hasn't got mid cats, but a 'straight through' silencer (mid muffler just visible):

Anyway, you can similary remove the 2nd cats if you have them; the 2nd lambda's are behind the primary cats, so that won't give a CEL.
A catalytic converter also muffles the sound a little bit, and more important, obstruct flow, thus restricting power!

Can anyone tell me what the part is circled in RED???? :?

Mine has a smaller silencer, similar to your pictures - it's a RHD UK 2006 3.0si FWIW.

A friend of mine dissected and removed the innards of an original backbox for mine and I am very pleased with the noise on both short blasts and longer journeys.
