Heavy steering on Z4

After 3 days got my beloved back, from local garage. Been quoted 3K for new steering column, am in a state of shock, only had car 8 wks !!!!!

Ouch!

I don't think this can be right although I am not speaking from a position of knowledge.

Get another opinion and I am sure there will be other better more knowledgable opinions expressed shortly on here.

If you have sticky steering, there is a permanent fix:

But chances are about 0% that you can find a shop that can do this adjustment because most shops lack seriously in knowledge.
They don't have a clue generally so they swap the complete column....
Less knowledge and more profit. win-win for them.

Try this. I did it, it helped but I don't think its completly solved the issue...on my car anyway.

I also found the thread that GuidoK is referring to whilst searching online for a solution, it needs translating and is over 100 pages long but there is a simple mechanical adjustment that fixes the problem correctly, took me fifteen mins tops and the car is like new. Can't believe no one over here has picked up on it.

8 weeks of ownership and a 3 grand bill to be fixed? Someone's having a laugh!! If you have a 'standard' 3 month warranty, then the garage you bought it off can sort it out, but I'm suspecting you did a private buy and feel differently?

what is the simple mechanical adjustment?
mark555 did it just go very heavy all of a sudden like the power assist on the steering stopped or is it the dreaded sticky steering?

Basically there is an eccentric spacer between the motor and steering column that when tuned anti clockwise moves the motor slightly away from the gear it meshes with and relieves the tight tolerance, on German cars it seems that the two motor bolts are Allen bolts but on my car they are T10 torx bolts. The pages don't translate that well but I gather some people over there have completely removed the motor to grease it as well, I didn't on mine as I've already greased it which made no difference.
Give the thread a read because it's so quick and simple to do it makes you wonder why BMW themselves haven't picked up on it over here.
