Heated Seat Button Just Flashes

Hey all,
Heres a bit of a backstory: My heated seats have never really worked, we have plugged, un plugged, checked the wires, etc, and unfortunately we found nothing. Currently, upon pressing the button, it just flashes and then turns off. I had read somewhere that this means theres and in complete circuit but all the wiring looked continuous and unbroken, and we have tested the continuity of the seat. Are there any modules, etc, that could be not plugged in correctly (except the heated seat plug, we already checked that one)? Or does anyone have suggestions for how to troubleshoot them?

P.s. Just a basic question but am I correct to assume that if the wire for something would be bitten then the fuse would break pop?

I had the same issue.

I had a BMW specialist look into this. All the wiring was as it should be. They concluded that it was the actual heated element. We never replaced it as at the time we could only get the element from BMW which were on back order.

So, correct me if I'm wrong, but you're saying its the heat pad in the seat?
And also, then, was it BOTH heating elements, because both of my heating in driver and passenger don't work.

The only controller for the seat is integrated into the centre console roof/DSC/seat heating unit. Maybe pull that out and check the plugs/wiring.

Did you also check continuity of the temperature sensors in the seats ? i.e There is a thin wire next to the two thick (power & earth) heating wires in the block under the seat- it should be around 10KOhm when measuring between the wire & earth.

If both seats don't work, it would probably point to a failed centre console unit (or blown fuse, F16). You can get them off ebay.

If something bit a wire it may or may not blow a fuse.

Some of the info in this thread may be of help to you :

and this will give you wiring & fuse location help:

That was actually insanely helpful, and I think you may have just solved my problem. The second diagram was insanely helpful, and offered me new places to get continuities from. Amazing, Thank you much!

[ref]NewToZ4[/ref], forgive me as I've had a couple of glasses of red..................
However, I do think you are possibly the most (insanely  ) enthusiastic new member we've had for a while.
I for one will do my best to help you just to read your responses.
Really do hope you get your seats fixed ok.

Thank you! that means a lot, and me as well. Im hoping to run a continuity test from the all the points covered in the second post you gave me, as it could be a chew wire, but Im thinking odds are its a faulty switch, as it was wet underneath it, the first time I took it out. Thanks much, and ill make sure to keep you updated!

The thought of not having heated seats is unconshionable (or whatever the appropriate word is) at this time of year. Good luck with getting them fixed.
Robert.

This whole thread was just insanely fascinating. I'll be inanely getting over it for the whole day. :D

Just to give you an update: The problem ended up being the switch module, I had to replace it, and tada! Everything good as new.

Mine just flashes blue once on the drivers side, when pressed. The passenger side appears to work.

I agree with the need for heated seats. I was thinking how my 87 E30 convertible does not have heated seats, and how having the heated seats in a Z4 ragtop seems like it would be especially nice .
My 435ix has a heated steering wheel. Once you have that in Minnesota, your not gonna want to go without.

Interesting

Good to know it was the switch at fault

Did one side work and the other not- was just one button at fault?

Sorry for the late response ! University is crazy in the US. It was both sides that didn't work, but the roof button and tire pressure buttons still were fully functional.
