Heated Rear Window?

Hi All,

Ever since I've had my Coupe, when the weather is cold and I have a misted rear screen.. the elements only seem to heat the middle section and not the full screen.

Whilst this is not too much of an issue, it has been bugging me somewhat.
So my question is, is it normal for this to happen or not?

I tried to take a pic whilst driving but is not clear but you can kinda get the gist..

Any info would be great before I take it to the Stealers to have them take a look.

May only be a slight hairs width break? Caused by closing boot on something?

Wouldn't have been caused by me as I rarely have stuff in my boot so could've been a previous owner maybe?

As long as this isn't normal I'll get it booked in and they can look at it under AUC warranty.

Maybe a new rear screen is in order?

Cheers

Are any of the elements broken?

out of interest, is there a simple fix for this or will the whole element need to be replaced and would that be difficult?

You can't replace elements on screens like this, just fit a new rear screen. However, look and see if it has any elements above or below the section you see demisting. If not you have no problem.

Does anyone know if a "normal" glass replacement company such as Autoglass will be able to replace the rear screen, or is it a BMW job?

Mine does this - I know it's a roadster but only the middle clears and the bottom and top stay 'frosted'

Not sure about whether it's a specialist job but imagine that a quick call to Autoglass* (other suppliers are available :D ) would answer the question....

Be interested to know the outcome.

Thanks,

Dan

You can get a silver paint to fix the breaks in the tracks.

Cheap, easy, and effective.

+1
I've used it on a previous car with the same issue - special conductive paint
You may see the 'break' by a slight discolouration (blackened). also on mine at the point of the break it would initially de-mist and leave a small circle

Good luck

Looking at the photo again, it just looks very wet i.e the pattern suggests the heating elements are working.

Do you have the heater on a lot? Warm air retains moisture that then condenses on cooling - is the windscreen the same when it's cold?

Try having the air con on. This re-circulates the moist air. or leaving windows open for a couple of hours.
No roadster jokes pls :D

I do have the heater on, not a lot but when its a cold morning it'll be between 20 and 22 on the dial.

As for the wetness, that was rain residue from the night, screen on the inside never gets damp so this is purely on the outside.
The front screen is fine again never any condensation, I always check for damp patches in the interior so I have rued that one out.

It seems like the only section of the rear screen that is being heated is the middle 1/3rd which is odd.

Cheers
Dan.
