Heated mirrors

As far as I can tell, the heated mirrors have never worked on my E89. The glass never gets even slightly warm. So it's in the dealer today for them to have a look. When I dropped it off, they said that they only heat up when the temperature is low, which has got me thinking. On my E86 they were always on, which was really useful at clearing spots of water and condensation in the morning.

Is the dealer right? Does anyone else regularly feel their mirrors?! 8)

As far as i understand it - and i think i read this in the manual, there always on...

mine certainly come on and clear the condensation on them within 40 or so seconds of pulling off the drive, normally before they have even moved to there proper positions

Thanks - so hopefully they won't think I'm crazy! I'd look it up, but the manual is in the car :headbang:

The guy that gave me a lift home mentioned that they used to have problems with the heating elements burning out, which might explain a design decision to not have them on permanently... plus with the alternator not being permanently engaged anymore it might be necessary to save power.

Anyway, once I hear back from them I'll give an update!

I think its that way on the 1 series....only on under certain temps, but no idea about the z4.

So they ran through the testing process for the mirrors and found no faults. As far as I can tell from reading up about other models on other forums, the newer BMWs no longer have permanently heated mirrors. The heating is now variable and depends on a number of factors including outside temperature and wiper speed.

All in know is that when I look in my mirrors, they are often wet or misted up, whereas they never were on the previous car. Progress.

If they do work the way of the 1 series then they are crap as now we are getting condensation/due in the mornings you need to clear them.

Luckily there is a way. Unlike the E85/6 where they were on all the time at full pelt on the E89 they are temperature controlled with no apparent way of turning them on.

I found a way though. 8)

When you get in your car in the morning you probably need to clear the windscreen as well to remove the condensation/due, don't flick the lever but put your automatic wipers on. This will sweep the screen once clearing that but more importantly it will turn the heated mirrors on as they are on all the time your wipers are. They are still temperature related, because it was only 7 degrees this morning my mirrors cleared in less than a mile but when it's warmer it takes a few. Still better than not clearing at all though.

Very useful - thanks. Tried it just now, and yes, with the auto wipers on i could definitely feel the glass getting warm.

Dumb question, but are they standard equipment, or are heated mirrors an optional extra?

I bought a pre-registered car and forgot to check........now realising I need them with the damp in the mornings.

From the 2009 UK price list

Standard equipment

o Exterior mirrors in body colour, heated

Wow, I really didn't know I had heated mirrors. Stuck the wipers on auto this am and when I got to work the mirrors did seem slightly warm to the touch (I only drive for about 5-10 minutes lol).

Do they come on anyway or do you need wipers on auto?

In winter I don't put my wipers on in case they are stuck or get damaged by frost on the windscreen. Will the heated mirrors come on then? Maybe thats why I didn't think I had them as last year I don't recall seeing them working.
