I have summoned my mighty investigative skills and the power of plain sight to assist you. It goes under the end of the diagonal bar where it bolts to the strut tower.
I thought that, so it's just a case of getting a new bolt and reattaching it? Guess that's the noise I heard last night as sounded like something just fell off? Ooops.
Many thanks for your quick reply. And the welcome. Think I might need you guys regularly as I have an unlucky streak with cars lately
Just another quickie, would that have to be removed to replace the DSC module? Had to replace that recently so could be that garage haven't put heat shield back on properly?

Possibly, yep. It's down there somewhere, although I would have thought removing it via the wheel arch might have been easier.
Now you mention "new bolt" I realise that's what looks a bit funny. You've got a bolt head at the end of the reinforcement bar (the black diagonal bar) where there should be a nut! So I suspect it's upside down. If it is, you should remove it and reinstall with the bolt head on the underside. The heat shield mount slips over the mounting point on the strut tower, then the strut bar is secured on top of it with the nut. It should be torque'd up to 41nm.
Great, just had another look and it appears the nut is still there suggesting that it was never reattached following the DSC being fitted. Will be revisiting the garage tomorrow for an explanation. No sign of anything missing though which doesn't explain the worrying noise last night.
Well I got to the bottom of my rattling noise. It actually wasn't anything to do with the heat shield although have now had that reattached.
A bracket holding the exhaust back box had come apart and lost a bit of it somewhere on the dark motorway. Removed the whole bracket now until I can get a replacement. Guessing I'd need a BMW garage?
