No didn't hit anything. I was cruising on the motorway when I heard a bang.
Pulled up at home, had a look round the bodywork to see what it was but couldn't find anything. Had a look under the car and saw that dangling down.
Pretty common on other BM's by the look of things.

Cheers MM. Just having a look to see what garages local to me can do it.
Apparently the BMW fix is to replace the whole exhaust - £800+
The "common faults" on BMWs is ridiculous. I think they only get away with it because a huge proportion of their cars are corporate/lease/company and so repairs get covered no quibbles and no one kicks up a fuss.
Then we pick up the pieces 3 years+ down the line. I have a personal feeling that if this were another marque they would be constantly slated, ie pug / shitroen. We expect running costs due to the nature of the car being expensive to run ... Ironic

theres no harm in trying a weld. Like you say if it snaps again then its a reason to buy an after market one 
You can do either. a back box will usualy give you just extra noise & a cat back will give you noise and maybe a tiny bit more power (im sure someone will correct me if im wrong) although i dont think its that noticable from reading other peoples posts about exhausts

I had mine done on my previous 3.0si and it was around 30 quid to get done.
I also had the same £800 shock from BMW at the time when I tried to claim under warranty.
I think if you push them - they will cave in - or at least give you some discount of servicing or something else. I had a few things which needed doing at the time under warranty and they refunded me the cost of the weld as they said an issue i reported was that - when it turned out to be something else completly!
End of the day - it should not break - and affect some many people!!
