Anyone know a decent headunit that will work with my iPhone as in play both the music and be able to use it handsfree also?

You could for an Alpine iDA X-305 mated with KCE-300BT

http://www.alpine-europe.com/alpinefullspeed/

the X-305 has replaced the X-001

Have fitted the X-305 in my Z4 and am very happy with it.

that's the best one I could find too. be aware that if you have anything over the standard 6 speaker audio pack ie you have an amp in the boot you can't just change the head, there are a few posts worth searching out which go into detail

Ive heard alot of mixed reviews about the KCE-300BT/350BT, still cant decide if i should get one or not to go with my Alpine 9886R. Will be getting the imprint sound processor first

Just one of many results from a search, check out the compatibility in the specs, also note the Blue tooth interface looks like its been updated too.

So I guess this unit is a no go for my hi-fi 10 speaker system in the Z then which is standard?

If you have a 10 speaker system your looking at a complete re-wire, and external amps to power the extra speakers/subs if you want to change the headunit.

I used this in my 320D, great system.

Works great and looks great too.
The FM transmitter it a big no no though, but as long as its connected via Line in its great.
It would mean binning your changer and using an adaptor to convert the changer input into a line in input though.
Probably cost you £100 all in.

:D

Oh dear. I guess not the cheapest way to listen to my ipod in the Z then! Must be an easier way!

Seems like you are in the same boat as me, I was going to get an Alpine head unit, but having the 10 speaker set up as well, I am probably going to get the AUX input instead.

I've got to ask what's wrong with an FM transmitter, I was using a Kensington one(can't remember which) which transmitted song names and artists over the RDS signal for about 18 months prior to fitting the Alpine head unit, I never experienced any problems with it, the sound was good and it kept the iPod charged, I still use it when in a hire cars which is most of the time, that said my Old Man has a real cheap one and that does sound very tinny, so I guess you get what you pay for.

I had a Belkin FM transmitter and it was OK but there was a background crackle I couldn't get rid of. Got a Dennison wired in now and it's neat tidy and good quality.

fm transmitter also acts like an ariel and pick up the annoying mobile phone search signal and broadcasts it over your speakers i found, aux in doesnt

just found this, don't know how good or bad it is but could be what you are looking for?
