Headlights (xenon or halogen)

Halogens on a Z4 are useless - no idea what the hell BMW buggered up when they designed them on the e85/86, but they're extremely poor IMO.

I've got halogens on my e90 and they're FAR better.

I have halogens, my wife's Honda has Xenons. I want xenons, but THB I can live with mine. Brighter bulbs help.

HIDS-DIRECT.co.uk

Go for the slimline kit

VvrooomM, with full beam I would agree most halogen lights are fine, it's on dipped beam that the xenon lights make a big difference.

Height above the ground makes a difference too, my Micra was great at night 'cos it was the noddy shape with the lights set halfway up the bonnet.

ranski, just read through the epic threads on this from a11ys onwards... Is it an easy job ? And do I need clear lenses, as mine are ribbed ?

I feel a practical pre-winter mod coming on after my recent diversion into boy racer land with spacers and lowering :D

Yep, pretty much apart from I'd bought mine before slimline became available at a decent price hence my ballast sat outside of the headlight. Massive improvement though. Actually removed the kit from the Z4 before selling it, debating reinstalling it into my e90 but awaiting the outcome of MOT regs.

Bing - I didn't change my lenses from teh OEM ones but if I'd kept it longer then I'd probably have swapped to the clear ones. MASSIVE improvement in light output without pissing off other drivers if adjusted correctly. Definately slimline ones so that they fit within the headlamp unit with no visible signs.

I bought clear, unribbed lens from the USA after i read on the thread about 'glare'

However I wouldn't go to those lengths again if I was to do another

I actually paid someone to fit mine, but when I changed to clear headlights i migrated the xenons myself and it's quite straightforward

Go to halfords for your MOT!

Mine passed a few weeks ago, afterwards the manager said they were only interested in the beam pattern :o

The only clear lenses on eBay are over £90 from the US... Too steep for me. As for MOT, I have some rubbing inside my arch that Halfords might pick up on

you do not always have the adjuster switch either - unless that is standard on BMW.

Halogen, no adjuster, no wash but still fine.

Thanks for the help guys, unfortunately it's halogens I've got :-(

Any suggestions for better bulbs to improve visibility?

Sorry to bump,

Just about to pull the trigger on some headlights for my Z4MC that has some condensation on the current ones.

Are these xenons? I'm thinking the ballast goes in that area under the headlight.

He's also go headlight washers and self leveling he says (but he's in Australia so I don't know about whether that means anything in terms of legal requirements etc)

Thanks guys

As mentioned here in the US we don't have the Headlight washers. This is because it is the American car manufactures way of helping us with our obesity. Forcing us to stop every so often to get out and clean the headlights!!!!
