Headlights (xenon or halogen)

I've got a 2003 Z4 and have no idea whether it's fit halogen headlights or xenons - is there any easy way to tell?

They have orange indicators in them if that makes a difference?

Xenons are self levelling & had the headlamp washers. When you start the car, if they do a little dance as they test the self levelling, you have Xenons

Do you have head light washes?
Halogens can have them as well as xenons, so can't be used to tell.

Simple way to tell:
- xenons don't have a numbered height adjustment dial next to the headlight switch
- halogens don't

CornishRob makes a bloody good point though :lol:

Simple way to tell is stand at the front of the car and look at them when they're on - I'll be shocked if it's not then obvious!

Sorry, but the first 2 tests are not indicative of xenon. Either can have washers (although xenon must) and all headlights cycle to reset the stepper motor position.

a11y is right re the single adjustment wheel on the light switch (just for panel illumination and not for headlight angle)

Other good signs are under bonnet yellow warning decals
flicker and then stabilising light when switching on
engraving of DS2 on the healamp unit
level sensor on 2 of the suspension arms

and I could go on.

I'm confused a11y... :poke:
I'm confused myself :oops:

Should read:

- halogens do

My 3.0si came from the United States and while it has zenons, it does not have headlight washers. The North American regulation on that must be different than the European rule.

Yes - a UK or EU regulation that cars with xenons must have washers. Idea is to remove dirt that could diffuse the beam and dazzle oncoming drivers.

The easiest way to tell - can you see anything at night?

Yes = xenon
No = halogen

:tumbleweed:

I will second that, halogen = useless.
garbage!!

I have Halogen in my 2011 Spyder and nighttime visibility is excellent. I was worried as I'd thought xenon were standard and bi-xenon were cost option only to find it was either halogen or bi-xenon option.

The light is not as white but with full beam, visibility is as good as needed for the speeds the car is capable of.
