HEADLIGHTS GO OFF WHEN CAR IS IDLE

DROVE OFF AND LOW BEAM LIGHTS CAME ON..PULLED UP AT TRAFFIC LIGHTS ...LOW BEAM WENT OFF AGAIN..DROVE OFF LIGHTS..AND CAME ON AGAIN..VERY STRANGE ..ANY IDEAS... 
which setting is the light switch on, Auto / off / side lights / low beam?
was there a large vehicle behind you at the lights as the sensor in the rear view mirror might have thought it was dark so turned lights on but when you pulled away it changed back as there was more light.
