Headlight washers

What’s the criteria for them to work?

Is it every 3 sprays? 10 sprays? Do I need to leave a certain time between windscreen sprays i.e headlight on 3rd spray but only if at least one minute apart.

I’ve had my bumper off and reinstalled, just want to check everything is working but when I pulled the windscreen wash multiple times in quick succession the headlight washer didn’t activate.

Are you sure they were working before you had the bumper off?

I spent a while fiddling with mine, only to find out they were coded out by a previous owner, which doesn't seem too uncommon as people don't like to "waste washer fluid and/or the mess it creates on the bonnet  " .

In trying to diagnose where the fault was I ended bodging some "jumper cables" to power the headlamp pump from the connector of the windscreen washer (they sit next to each other and supply same power levels but the sockets are different). Low and behold, they worked without an issue every time I puled the trigger to wash the "windscreen".

If I want them to work again I need to code them back in (presumable this can be done in Carly), but to be honest, I'm fine with them disabled. I only really started investigating them as my car was due an MOT and I'd read people saying Xenon's needed headlamp washers, which made me question if mine worked as I hadn't ever seen any evidence of them doing so.

I left them as they are and it wasn't even mentioned in the MOT notes. Apparently it's only a legal requirement on newer cars.

Mine were definitely working as an inadvertent activation happened in the garage.

Went for a road test and they're working well but it's definitely not just every 5 pulls of the stalk, there's some other criteria; probably time since last spray as it doesn't come on if you just do it in quick succession.

I was trying to test mine at RBM last week after Ross replaced one of them because it had been leaking.

With the lights on they'll work, but to get them to repeat just turn the ignition off then back on and spray again.
