Headlight Washers Popping but not Squirting - E85

Evening folks.

My MOT is due soon, and I had realised that I hadn't seen my headlight washers operating, or even rising from inside the bumper, so I set about investigating why last week. I know they are required to be functional for the MOT, where fitted, before anyone says they aren't needed :wink: I'm not concerned at this stage about the caps flying off at this stage.

The jets wouldn't even pop up, so I ordered a new pump, which I fitted this afternoon; the problem remained. Hoping to ascertain where the tee is, splitting the flow of water to each washer jet, I had a fish around inside the bumper (the undertray has had a small hole since purchase). Lo and behold, there was an incredibly rusty set of mole grips clamping the hose. I eventually got them off, unkinked the hose, and tested the washers a few times (I'm aware of the 1 in 5 headlight squirts per windscreen squirts).

The washer jets pop up on the first operation of the pump, go back down when the pump stops, and then they come back up again when the pump operates for a second time on the same pull of the stalk on the column.

I can't see water pi$$ing out of anywhere, although everything is still wet from disconnecting the old pump. If there were a leak however, I wouldn't expect the jets to rise from the bumper, as I believe the jets rise due to water pressure (backed up by the fact that they wouldn't rise with the mole grips preventing flow). There is definitely enough water in the reservoir.

My questions are as follows:

Does everyone else's jets rise twice for a single pull of the stalk? If so, is water expelled from the jets on each occasion?
Has anyone else encountered this problem? If not, any suggestions?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.
 
Maybe the jets are blocked? Not sure if they block? just an idea :?

Sounds like the removal of the mole grips and the new pump has fixed the issue.

You're correct that it's hydraulic pressure that causes them to rise and the intervals between screen washes for them to function.

The only other thing to check is that the filter below where you fitted the pump is not clogged with gunge, however if the jets are rising it sounds like you have adequate flow.

As an aside it's incredible that someone would clamp a hose with mole grips and leave it....

I'm not certain, yet, that all is well - but at least I do know, courtesy of the diagram, that there is only one supply to each jet :thumbsup:

The jets appear to be clear, so why water isn't spraying out, but the jets rise from the bumper, I simply do not know.

The tee looked ok when I fished the grips out of the bumper, but short of removing the undertray and having a nosey whilst the pump is operating, I'm unable to see if there is a leak from them yet under pressure.

Perhaps I need to clag up 12v to the pump to see if there's an airlock that needs to be expelled...
 
Sorry I did not realise from your first post that water was not coming out if the jets.

Then it's simple - the jets are blocked as the pump is working pressuring the system and causing them to rise.
You can grab the nozzle when someone activates it and try to clear both jets each side with a pin or fine drill, but I'd bite the bullet take the bumper off disconnect the jets and clean them out properly.

Following further investigation this evening, I believe the pipe is still kinked where the mole grips were clamping it, resulting in reduced flow. I was able to grab the OS jet and pull it further out than it protrudes under pump pressure; the jets are clear too. A small dribble came out when I fully extended the jets.

So it looks like I'll be fishing around for the pipe inside the front bumper again tomorrow, and seeing if I can resolve this :)
 
Right...so having chopped out the kinked part of the pipe, and fitted a hose connector, the problem still remains - the jets don't pop out of the bumper enough to spray the headlights.

I refitted the old pump today, and voila - all singing, all dancing - the replacement pump was faulty, which I will be seeking a refund for.

A lot of hassle because someone didn't think to unplug the pump, instead of fitting mole grips (rolls eyes).
 
Result at last. Badgers create so many issues for the next owner :(

If also be the first to admit I didn't expect the new pump to be faulty, hence my diagnosis.
