Headlight washer leaks, what to look for first.

I've found a bill for the car I've just bought.
It Says, investigate headlamp washer leaking, fix "disconnected washer system".

Before I take the bumper off I wanted to know what to look for, do the pipes leak/fail, is there one or two pumps and where are they situated. Do the washer units on the bumper fail.

you can find the washer units inside the lower inspection hatch behind the wheel...if you have xenons you have 2 pumps situated on/by the fluid reservoir, yes the washer units can fail< I have just replaced my nearside one

In my case it was the actual headlight washer unit that was leaking. If you remove the bumper (which is a 15 minute job) you will see exactly where the water is leaking from.

I tried putting some Sealant around the bottom of the unit, but it only works as a short term fix and eventually it started leaking again. It was about £50 from BMW for a new one.

If it's the hose as in my case then the complete hose from the bottle to both jets is under £30

I've had both replaced, one under warranty and the other by my own wallet. About £60 for me.
it is possible to replace them without taking the bumper off.

Surprise surprise, whilst out on one of my first drives this evening I cleaned the screen, I was pleased to see the O/S headlamp got cleaned, so I'm half way better off I suppose. Now a bit of investigating to see what's up with the left.

yes.... but its a ballache

Whatever it is, the best.and quickest way to sort it out is by removing the front bumper.

It can either be the washer jet units, the pipework or the pump that goes from the washer bottle to the pipework. All of which are easily seen upon removal of the bumper.
