headlight washer jets

Hi does anyone know wether or not the headlight washer jets can be repaired? if so any descriptions of "how to" would be great. I’ve blanked the leaking one off so the other one does work but no windscreen washer working so I’m assuming the motor is knackered.

cheers

Andy

The windscreen washer motor is separate to the headlight washer motor so something doesn’t add up there. Might be worth emptying the washer bottle and checking the filter for gunk.

Yes I know it's a separate motor, the headlight one is working, but nothing from the windscreen one. Will have a look at the filter
Cheers

Well finally made some progress today, got the leaking headlight washer actuating using a bike pump with a bit of pipe on it, operated it a few times hooked it back up to the fluid supply and no leaks, it seems to have re sealed itself. The only down side is the windscreen pump is shot so ordered a new one. So hopefully once fitted I’ll have a fully working washer system.

Happy days. :D :D

That's great news.

These headlamp washers are fine when they work, but a real PITA when they leak as you lose all the fluid for the screen-washers too. :headbang:

Now mine aren't leaking I've pulled Fuse 40 to stop them working. That way I won't be getting streaks up the wings or losing jets/covers! I put it back in for the MOT though, just in case.

Thanks mate, yes that might be a wise decision to pull the fuse, but I’m gonna bask in my own glory for now and enjoy my headlights being washed

You can deactivate the headlight washers via Carly too. Reactivate for MOT obviousy.

Yeah my left nozzle is leaking, which means the fluid lasts around 3-4 weeks befores its empty.

on ebay you can get them for £73 delivered from abbroad but will take 3weeks to arrive, BMW wakefield £82 and here in 2 days, so for sake of a few quid ive gone with that

Jesus talk about inflation, I replaced one of mine 3 years ago, it was 42 quid delivered :o

Pre 2009 headlight washers don’t come under the mot, I’m sure I’ve read that.

The Tester will inspect vehicles first used on or after 1 September 2009 equipped with headlamp washers

Defect
a. Headlamp cleaning device:
i. inoperative - MINOR
ii. inoperative in the case of LED or gas discharge systems (HID) - MAJOR

Good point Andybutters & enuff_zed

The MOT inspection manual (link here) says exactly what enuff_zed posted.

I guess all E85 & E86 will be first used before 1st September 2009 so their headlamp washers won't be tested, irrespective of whether they have Xenons or not.

I read on loads of forums that this is the case regarding the MOT, headlamp washers and pre 2009 cars.

One of my headlamp washers leaked (a lot), where the tank would be emptied within 24 hours. So I removed the fuse, discounted the pipe work from the headlamp washer pump and then cable tied it to the FEM, and put a rubber cap with a jubilee clip on the output of the headlamp washer pump to ensure it doesn't leak.

Hi Paul, in theory you might be able to do it by removing the cover from the headlamp access in the wheel-arch liner, but Ross at RBM had to remove the front part of the arch liner when he sorted mine.

Easier than removing the bumper though!

Thanks - I'll have a play. At least I assume why the washer tank empties and an accusing puddle appears next to the offside front wheel.

I was NOT looking forwards to taking the bumper off.
