Headlight start-up self check intermitent fault

When turning the headlights on to drive to work I'm finding that both the headlights are set too low, due to the initial self checking sets the lights too low, as if it does not move both of them up high enough. I find that after driving for 20mins I turn the lights off and then back on then they set at the correct height. This is not ideal as the first part of my journey is dark country lanes and initially the headlights don't project far enough into the distance.

Any ideas what the problem is and how I can solve it? It affects both headlights not just one.
 
As you say the cycling is to set the headlights at the correct static level and given it doesn't work on either light unit then when you try again correctly sets both would lead me to think it's related to the suspension sensors and not the light units. There is one on each of the front and rear and so that's where I'd be checking

I don't know if they throw codes and there's not much you can do to maintain them, but I'd take a look and ensure they are clean and would disconnect, operate and refit them

If not them possibly the LCM itself
 
Thanks for the help, they are not xenon (originally halogen) so there are no sensors on the suspension front or rear but I will check later to see if any fault codes have been recorded.

Sorry - assumed xenon as it's a common issue that if the sensor are broken the lights don't cycle up correctly

I'd go to the LCM as clearly step motors are getting current and operating, but not to the correct 'set' point.
I'd also do a battery disconnect (as it's quick and easy if they have got confused
