Headlight Cover

Hmmm it appears as if I have a small crack in one of my headlight covers. Having driven through a few puddles of late I now notice a decent amount of water has got in behind the cover...its not the end of the world but I guess I should get it sorted!

Is this a full replacement of a headlight unit or can I somehow just get a new plastic cover? Any ideas on costs and whether its a DIY job or dealer job?
 
AFAIK you can only buy new units from BMW - as they are not designed to be separated.

IIRC cj10jeeper opened his to modify them, so it can be done - if you found a broken unit with a decent cover you might be ok.
 
Nargh - forget even trying - not worth the effort.

Tell me what light you have (halogen or Xenon and with amber or clear, NS or OS) and I'll see what I have in the garage
 
Its a clear unit on the passenger side. The car is an 04 but I dont know if any mods have been made to what was standard in terms of headlights. As a total novice on cars I may sound like a complete idiot but how can I tell if its Xenon or Halogen?
 
If Xenon:
Yellow warning stickers under bonnet near the lights
Slight flicker when they are first switched on
You will have headlamp washers but they are optional on halogen
Ability to see anything in the dark = xenon ...


If it's clear indicator you'll be unlikely to find one and if Xenon almost zero chance second hand.

IIRC dealer is around £350 halogen £750 Xenon

You wouldn't happen to have a drivers side halogen with amber indicator? Silver reflector too :wink:

I've got a crack in the middle of mine. It's not leaking at all. It's just something I was planning on replacing when one comes up on ebay for cheap but it always seems to be passanger side lights on there :headbang:
If I could get a cheap set or two, I'd be tempted to try the clear conversion.
 
I'll have a look in the garage when I get time as I have forgotten what's stored. Just back from a couple of weeks vacation so a lot to sort out

Not so much really as I sold off mostly to cover the costs as I went along. I just bagged several lights as they came up knowing I would need them for the pairs I converted
