Headlamps

Hi,
We are on a Euro road trip in the next couple of weeks. I remember a thread on the beam adjustment but can't seem to find it now, but I am sure there was no real answer.
The manual says remove the back of the headlamp and move the lever over. I have just removed the backs but can't realy see a lever. Has anybody found one before I resort to the dealer?

Thanks in advance
Paul

forgot about this, job for tomorrow night

how strict are the bobbies in europe?

The Gendarmerie can get a bit arsey for no apparent reason other than a GB sticker on the car. I know lots of guys who have had hassle at Le Mans but I suppose that is only to be expected.

If in France remember to have a hi-vis jacket for every person in the car and this must be kept in the cabin, not the boot.

They do check this and it's just another item to add to the list if you get pulled for speeding.

I'd also read up on some of the German road etiquette. Will make your trip more interesting and fun. The Germans have it sussed IMHO.

Thanks for the replies, there must be a lever by judging from the posts its not easy to find. I will have another look.

Well i had another go with a mirror and torch and removed the panel in the wheelarch but still couldn't see anything. So I popped to the local dealer who's only comment was yes there is one you need to feel for it rather than look for it.
So I tried again with my hand completely in the light and I found it, so all is now good.

m999psw i take it you are in an e89? If so i'm intrigued as my dealership told me there wasn't a lever to change the light setting, i was contacting them last year about a euro trip. what model are you driving and what year? I should be off on a trip soon too and if the lights can be altered it will make me feel a lot happier. Elsewhere it has been posted that the new lights are 'flatter' in beam throw and so won't dazzle :?

I hope u don't have Xenons... There's 20,000 volts running around in there if u do, enough for u to meet your maker....

All E89's have Xenon's as standard.

Then that's downright negligence on the part of the dealer to say have a rummage around in the light cluster, ignition off or not...

Funny you mention the high voltage, the dealer did suggest I put the car near a wall and have my hand inside the lamp so that I could see if i found it - I did say to him that it wasn't a good idea with the high voltage. But if he had given that advice to someone who didn't understand the dangers it could have been very serious.
Yes it is an E89 2009 and does have the levers as per the manual. The manual does state to take the key away from the car particuarly if it has comfort access. I took the key out and waited the half an hour for the car to go to sleep before I put my hands in.

2,500 miles later and we are back. We started in the Black Forrest which has some great roads then on to the Blue forrest, with equally fun roads and then the ring. I am even more impressed with the car now than when I bought it. We had enough space for everything in the boot in the custom luggage so that we could use the roof and didn't have to be surrounded by the overflow. On the AutoBahns it handled beautifully and felt solid at the 120 (resticted by my passenger apart from when she fell asleep) cruise between locations.
The track was great fun and the car way more capable than me, totaly addicitve but I did need to save the tyres for the trip home.
Our first Euro road trip with out the kids and not the last - and with all the enthusiastic driving in between the motorway trips the overall mpg was 31.8 for the trip.

Hi sorry to raise this again as it seems silly and i'm feeling something like a twit but i cannot find anything in my manual about headlamp adjustment. There are a couple of very short paragraphs on page 99 under rules of the road, headlight converters: but this just talks about stick on beam deflectors. There is nothing either in the lights section starting on page 71. Sorry to ask but 'Help' :( Any clues anyone?

It does say there is a switch in the light to adjust for european driving. In the end I found the one in the passenger light by removing the back of the light, removable plastic cover, and sticking my hand in. You will know when you find it as it is a definit click in and out, I couldn't see it with mirrors and a torch but It is on the top of the lamp.
