So... Not used my car for a few days cos of the snow etc....

Decided today to just clear all the snow and ice of it and noticed my driverside headlamp washer sitting proud of the pumper... gave it a little pull and out it came!!

Does anyone know how these assemble? Has this just been forced out by ice inthe mechanism or under the cover or has something snapped?

Tried to push it back in but it didnt go, dont want to apply more force until I know how it assembles...

Thats a new one :o

no idea how it is assembled but I do know that it only works on hydraulics no motors (at the washer end) are involved.

Ive replaced a fully working but damaged one which I could take a look at over the weekend if I get a chance.

They cost about £50 to replace but you have to take the bumper off...

Thanks Gannet, if you could have a quick look for us that would be great.

So, I take it when u buy a complete unit it comes with the piston firmly seated in the housing? So you wouldnt usually see this unless u took it apart?

It doesnt look to me like anything in there is broken but I dont think it would reassemble without removing the unit and hence the bumper...

I wonder if thats happened as the fluid in the hoses froze causing it to expand?

How much screenwash addetive do you have in the mix to stop it freezing?..you may find as the temps go up (in a week!) it may go back together? It seems as if the hydralics use pressure changes to activate the unit and to return it to closed again

Was thinking the same.... popped my bonnet to have a look at the mix.... however, the bonnet didnt pop... frozen shut!

Certainly a plausible explanation.

Ill try and pull my spare apart and see how easy or otherwise it is to get back together. It works in everyway except holding onto the cover

Right Ive had a chance to look at my 'spare'...

some photos :D

As it should sit:

Tab (circled) holding the bit that has come out of yours:

Lift that tab and pull and it comes out and looks like this, the tab latches on to the grooves on the body:

Reinserting - It will only go back in one way

Hope that tab circled above hasnt broken off - if it hasnt then it should just be a case of gently pushing it back in - it should 'click' as it goes...

Hope that helps

Cheers Gannet.

I tried to puch it back in this morning, now the temps are (ever so slightly!) above 0 and it slotted back in no problems...

The washer fluid must have frozen and pushed it out!

Now my only problem is that, trying to check if the fluid had frozen the other day I made the mistake of trying to open the bonnet when it was frozen shut.... now my bonnet release handle no longer seems to open the bonnet..... I can hear the cable moving when I pull the handle but no release.... I cant even open the bonnet to see if I can find the problem Grrrr!

Remember the release needs two clicks - my second is at the very extreme of the cable, so I have to pull mine hard to get the second click.

Had the Emergency Service out yonks ago for something else & they tightened it up for me.

Some time ago I thought my bonnet release cable was about had it as it would only just about release the bonnet. I read that spraying plenty of WD40 through the grille at it wold help. I doubted that, as it was so bad, but it made a huge difference and has been fine since. Got to be worth a try I'd have thought, hope it works.

Same has happened to me. First the passenger side then I noticed the drivers one gone too. I need to get sorted it out in the spring.
Cheers Ian

Hi All,

I have just had this happen to me in the past week, I appear to have lost the part that pops out to squirt the headlights. Could anyone tell me where I can get this part and what is the usual cost?

When I needed a part for the unit I was told it came complete with only the little plastic cover being supplied seperately. I recall it being about £75 for the unit but someone else mentions £50. I got hold of a leaking unit and salvaged the parts I needed. Note that all the parts for these units appear to be handed including the plastic covers so make sure you get the correct side. They are easy enough to work on once you work out how to unclip/re-fit components which is mostly done with plastic clips.

I've also had this happen on mine.

I need the nozzle bit from the top and also the cover. (Driver's side)

Does anyone have part numbers or shall I just go to the dealers?

I went to dealer and got the full unit and a new plastic cover for £64 inc vat, just to fit it now
