Head until not recognising CDs in multichanger - "no disc"

Hi all,

Hope everyone is well, and managing to shake off the January blues!

When selecting a CD from a disc that's stored in the CD multichanger (between the seats), the CDs are not recognised and the head unit says "no disc'. When ejecting / inserting the multichanger, there appears to be power to the multichanger itself, so I don't believe it's a fuse issue.

And ideas on what's going on would be appreciated. No super rush, as the sound of the engine is more than music to my ears!

Thanks all.

Have you tried cycling through the inputs (I think it’s the Mode button)? Remember there is a cd slot in the head unit. If there is no cd in there, but that’s your input, it will show as “no disc”. You have to actually select the cd changer as your input device.

Late response but two questions. Can you easily remove and reinsert the cartridge into the changer? Have you tried pulling the fuses for the radio and CD changer. I forget the fuse number. I think it's 48 but check. I used to have this problem often but it was caused by the cartridge getting stuck in my case and the head unit seems to give up after a while and assume the changer is dead. Pulling the fuses usually got it visible again. Eventually I gave up on it and put a blue music adapter in.

Thanks. There doesn't appear to be an issue with the cartridge. I'll take a further look, but when I last looked at it, everything appeared fine. I'll take your advice on the fuse. As previosley mentioned, the head unit is not recognising the changer, when I cycle through. I'll keep going! It's not super important, as I prefer the engine noise compared to anything that comes out of the speakers!

Pulling the fuses for the changer and the radio usually gets my head unit seeing the changer again until it got stuck then eventually the head unit seems to detect that the changer is not responding to commands and simply starts pretending it's not there

FWIW, after 20 years there's a good chance the laser has gone short sighted. Common sort of problem. My E46 head unit eventually stopped reading written CDRs (but would still read pressed ones) and my E85 struggles after the first few seconds of playback on pressed ones.
