Head unit problem

The head unit has started behaving very erratically but only when playing mp3 discs

Plays fine for a while and then starts misbehaving - initially starts pausing mid track so there is a gap then this progresses to not playing at all and showing disc error

The id3 tags work and sometimes stop working on a disc that was previously showing id3 tags

Also stops responding to any advance or rewind track controls

Works 100% fine with no-mp3 audio discs

Anyone had similar?

Sounds like it's the mp3 disc rather than your head unit. I had a similar thing on a previous car. Try another mp3 disc recorded on a different recorder or if that's not possible try another brand of disc. Mp3 discs can be temperamental.

That was my first thought - should have said - have trialled a load of different mp3 discs and they all seem to do the same...

Still think it's more likely to be a burning issue rather than a reading issue and it's easy to rule out burning issues first.

If you have tried different brands of disc, burned by different software at different speeds, in different writers all with the same result - then yes you have a problem in the head unit. If so, and you have never been able to play mp3 discs properly then it's likely you have an older unit that may not be able to play mp3 properly. If it used to play them and has now deteriorated then the head may have been shaken and come un-aligned (bad word). The head is a lot more tolerant reading audio CDs than mp3 data discs. You could try one of these laser cleaning discs. Never done so myself and don't know if they work though but might be worth a try.

I've had some luck with a cleaning disc in my DVD player. It's very dusty where I live. Because it contacts the laser lens, one shouldn't use it unless it's called for. Do not use it for preemptive maintenance.
