Head Gasket Failure?

Hi guys. I have owned my 3.0 2003 z4 now for about 2 months and have been very paranoid about everything from the beginning. The engine uses oil but have read that this is a known thing so I haven't really thought anything of it since. About a month after purchasing I had a mayo oil filler cap but not on the dip stick. I took this to a local specialist as I was loosing coolant also. After the specialist had it for a day he said there was nothing wrong, coolant had dropped because it had been over filled and mayo was there because I was doing little mileage (6 miles a day). He had pressure tested the cylinders and leak tested the coolant system and found nothing wrong. Tonight how ever the low coolant light lit up for about 1 minute then went out, this was after driving approx. 15 miles. So I stopped and opened the bonnet. I could see fluid on the under tray, had a look about and couldn't see any leaks or water marks around obvious areas of the engine. I had a look at the radiator and could see it was wet all over the front. I then felt the radiator hose and this was rock solid. Let it cool down a touch and checked the coolant level, there was enough there to get moving again. I managed to get home with a watchful eye on the coolant temp with my trusty mobile code reader/live data tool and the temp at its highest was 103°c. I kept the engine running and had another look under the bonnet the fan was spinning at a slow constant pace yet my A/C was not on. Am I being severely paranoid about it being HGF or have I got reason to worry?

Many Thanks
Dan

Hi dan. I have a 2004 z4 and it developed a coolant leak 10 days ago. Went into specialist today and split expansion bottle has been diagnosed. Worth a check?. Jon

Welcome dan , getting the coolant level just right is sometimes tricky , i would top up very small amounts & always make sure the lid is on tight
I wouldn't panic on the HG until its a cert , could be a leaking hose ?

Sounds like you have a small leak on your radiator cooling system not a HGF.
What was the coolant level when the engine cooled down? Roughly how much did you loose.
Is the fluid on the under tray If its coolant it should still be evident as it won't evaporate like normal water. Have a look.

As csm180 said, check the coolant tank. There's been a few of those reported recently and if you've got air in the system it will cause weirdness like the light coming on. If you're really worried about the head gasket, get a compression test done.

Also, Hello and Welcome!

Thanks very much for the welcome guys and for the positive comments. The fluid on the under tray looked like leaky coolant. The whole front of the rad looks wet. I'm going to put it back in with the specialist tomorrow hopefully. When running I couldn't see any obvious jets of water or drips.

Must admit I had the same worries as you, mine turned out to be a leaky thermostat housing that was replaced at a cost of £259 by my Indy Swifts Performance in Sheffield. It took about half a litre to get it spot on after the system was refilled but I have done some long journeys including Scotland an its stayed at the same level even after a standing still moment in Glasgow for about 45 minutes.
I have slight mayo on my oil cap as well but with the cold temps and the short (7) mile journeys I'm not worried, plus even after a long journey it's the cold temps that create condensation on the cap that ultimately attracts oil into it when it eventually starts to warm up I'm sure it will disappear
