Mainly due to my geo-political views. I was warned that a lot of people there (especially from this forum) were either Military or ex-Military and thus if the topic of US Foreign Policy came up that it would be best to shut my trap.

Since I am a freedom loving person and refuse to shut my trap - I though discretion should be exercised and I should spend that weekend stimulating the Canadian economy which I plan to do to the best of my abilities. :thumbsup:

That in a nutshell is the reason I elected to miss this gala-event. I hope that you guys have tons of fun - and I am sure you will. :thumbsup:

I honestly believe you and I sincerely believe you are just plain afraid of dissension. Do you think we aren't diversified and intelligent enough to accept all geo-political views? Come on now. The differences within the board cover the entire spectrum, and, for the most part, we have learned to tolerate one another. THAT is what makes our community unique and quite frankly, strong. If there is a defect in my thinking it is not that your beliefs are so much different than mine or others, it is your inability to overlook the differences and embrace the qualities we all share: fun with our Z4's. We live an illusion. Co-existance is an illusion. It is also the foundation of peace. As long as we aren't taking liberty, material wealth or our beloved BMW's we live in peace. It is our deeds by which we are measured, not what we say.

By your decision not to participate, I believe you have cheated our community and yourself. I also respect your decision.

Enfield, I don't believe that line of fluff! Our forum here is very tolerant of most views, and surprising enough, most of our military/ex-military members are quite intelligent enough to have our own opinions on world views, and intelligent enough to listen to other, well-expressed, differing views that may actually improve our understanding of differing geo-political views that may affect us in future endeavours. :wink:

enfield, first let me say I am saddened when I first read that you would not be attending as I was genuinely looking forward to meeting you and I wish you would reconsider.

I do think that you might have a misunderstanding of either Military or ex-Military personnel. Contrary to how they are often portrayed in the popular culture (IE Movies & TV) senior NCO’s and officers are well educated and have an understanding of political and culture issues around the world better that most politicians and certainly better that most civilians. They have lived and served in many different countries around the world and often their duties required them to interact with the local population and as a result they understand the problem better that just about anyone. Their views are tolerant and they are usually flexible at the command level in carrying out their mission short of placing those they command at risk. They understand and respect the different cultures and customs and often there is even orientation and training for service personnel and their families before going to duty station out side the United States.

I grew up as a army brat and witnessed many passionate discussion in our home about politics and current events without these discussion ever becoming personal attacks. Military personnel are unusually well informed on current events because these events effect them directly and more so than just about anyone else. I think you would enjoy a discussion with a few military or ex-military individuals and it might give you a different perspective on some of the issues that you are concerned about. I think you would also be surprised at how often you would agree with them as well.
