Have you had your steering column replaced?

If you have had your steering column replaced please post here with details of where you sourced it and what year car.

Also whether yours had the locking pin inserted or not.

Has it been successful or not?

Was it replaced by BMW or independent, if so who?

Approximately how much did you pay?

Mine (2004 2.5SE) had the steering attended to in Feb 2013. I have an invoice from the previous owner - the work was carried out at Stratstone BMW. Cost of the job broke down as;

Parts : £1644.07
Labour: £180
Total £2188.88 inc VAT :o

Wording on the invoice says

"Attend to the steering is sticking when the vehicle is warm. Connected vehicle to ISDID and ran through test schedule. No faults stored. Carried out road test, unable to fault. Driver carried out road test, still no fault. Spoke to workshop controller who advised he'd seen this before and it was the power steering motor which is attached to the column"

But then it also says... Carried out Duty of Care and the final value of the invoice is only £45 - so I'm assuming this was done under warranty even though at the time the car would have been nearly 9 years old with a mileage of about 20k

Car has done 45k now and I've not noticed any further issues with it. Not sure if the part fitted was upgraded - though I hope so!
 
Sopers BMW, done under warranty. Don't have the invoice to hand, but remember it being £2k in total.

I'm not sure that there is a locking pin, and I believe that its a 'must have'

 
Thanks everyone for the responses, as I thought there's actually been far more replaced by BMW than privately.

I've been chasing a good column for a couple of weeks and they seem to be selling quickly so used columns are being fitted but maybe not very regularly in this forum? Would be great to hear from users who have sourced theirs from a breakers and had it fitted successfully or unsuccessfully.

This isn't the latest and greatest part number - the newest part starts with 6780730 and only this doesn't develop the worm gear/torque sensor issue.

The 6777329 is the first modification of the original 676xxx column. There was some success but BMW had to develop the 678xxx to fully cure the issue.

I had a dry sort of groaning from the steering column and took it into Sytners for diagnosis. They had it for a day and then advised me that it needed the
column replaced!! I asked how much, and their estimation was £2400. :cry: After picking myself up decided to take it for second opinion to a mechanic I know
and i stayed with him while he checked it out. What he done proved that this noise wasn't anything to do with the steering column, it was all coming from the
steering rack! removed the rack gaiters to expose the cogs and greased them up well, put It all back together and whoopy, my steering noise has gone. :D
So beware of changing the column, I had already bought a column off ebay, paid £400 for it but had found this out in the meantime so was able to return it
for a refund. :thumbsup:
