This thread is quite funny really, I had my first car thirty odd years ago when you HAD to be able to change a wheel, spark plug or sort out your fuses as an absolute minimum, even on a new car. Most of us were happy to maintain our bikes and cars and even rebuild them, but as Tazz says the complexity is restricting this now.
I can fully understand why someone would leave the greasy-fingernail stuff to garages and just get on with the driving, but deep down I quite like the challenge of tinkering with motors which is why I've had classics to play with for some years.

The real problem with the Zed is that beyond a couple of common niggles nothing too drastic or oily seems to need fixing on these cars, only thing left is taking the wheels off to clean the roof drains and get some 'Poorchaps super DB lotion' round the wheels :P

had mine off the other day to paint calipers but that morning i also had a flat. tried getting the front two off with no luck so got enough air to reach the fitting centre a few min away, took them a good few minutes to get them off aswell and they do it for a living  . when i got home i made sure i put plenty of grease between the wheel and the hub to stop it happening again

I guess this is the wrong audience being enthusiasts... but i would have thought that 90% of BMW drivers have never removed the wheel themselves.

The car comes with no brace/ jack or spare wheel.. why would they ever need to?

I am the only person among my friends who owns a trolly jack.. and i own 2

A little mishap i had over 6 years ago which should have been a reminder for me to stop removing wheels  :

Question for the 90% who have taken a wheel off. The rears are easy to line up & put back on, but without a friend pressing the foot brake how do you simply & easily line up the holes for the front wheel bolts first time every time, coz sometimes i struggle to 'find the holes'...

Anyone got any other trick they wanna share?

I've never found this to be a problem, I just look at where the holes are in the hub and wheel and line them up as I lift the wheel onto the hub :?

Hey, even I have taken one of my wheels off.

So does anybody have a great idea how I can stop the front disc rotating whilst I tighten the bolts on the spacers for the front wheels....

Is this a wheel off the Zed or any car?

 Only way to change a headlamp bulb on the alpina
Really! Why?

The 19" Dynamics fill the wheel arch, unless you have really skinny arms and about 3 elbows, you cannot get into the access hatch, even with full lock on. So the only way to change a bulb in there is to get the wheel off..

In the past I've done basic stuff with cars like brakes ect but tend not to bother now but I'm always at the bikes with my spanners. I dropped the engine out of one of them a couple of years back, split it and changed the sprag clutch. Would be happy to do the roof motor if that goes, think that's cos I'm tight though :P .

 I'd like to be able to but I seriously don't have strong enough arms. Need to get down the gym. This gal would prob only be able to remove the nuts, if not been screwed on too tight!

Haven't done it on the Zed yet, but will as soon as I can sort out a set of winter tires.

Done it multiple times on the Honda though (er ... is that a dirty word around here?), changing back and forth between summer and winter wheel/tire sets. Trolley jack + wheel wedges + compressor/impact wrench + torque wrench + a little care seems to get the job done swiftly and safely. Although a lot of people seem to do it by feel, I wouldn't want to go at it without a decent torque wrench. Also recheck the torque after driving around for a bit after a change.

Which way are you Applying full lock ? The wheel needs to be pointing out the way, not into the arch. Also, turn the wheel to full lock with the engine on, then hold it there until you have switched off and taken the key out - the steering lock will then hold the wheel facing out as far as possible. Of course if you are already doing that then you need to train up. Small child to help :P

Tried with full lock either way Bing, after much cursing and skinned knuckles, tried the small child route (modern version of Victorian chimney sweep). After a reference visit from Childline and social services, it seemed cheaper, less hassle and a totallackofskinnedknucklesitis to remove the wheel. I have a trolley jack which helps (although I had to remove the wheels off that to get it under the car jacking point :) )

Only other options I could see were:
- to book a visit from the Spanish Inquisition, and get my arms stretched/dislocated
- contact Stretch Armstrong (not in the yellow pages)
- contact Mr Fantastic (apparently too busy saving the world to change light bulbs)

I'll be taking mine off soon to treat them to some decent wheel wax...
Tapatalking...

My son finds it hilarious that I use rimwax - keep saying its for the wheels, but he seems to think there are other uses :o ? pah, teenagers
