This is what I asked myself as I listended to the guy on the other end of the phone. :?
When the Z was written off last month, the insurers whisked it away and offered £4750. I said no. They offered £4800. I said no. They offered, final offer, £5000. I said no. Seemed reasonable to me, comparable Zs were on sale for about £5500.
Even though I said no, they sent a cheque for £5000 which I was going to argue about and not cash. However, before I could do so I had a call from an independent assessor. Because I had said no 3 times, the matter has been referred to an ombudsman, interesting lesson to learn.
So, the guy said he had checked the market and found three comparable cars at roughly £5000, £5400 and £5800. So, on average, he told me, the £5000 offered by the insurers was spot on. In case my hearing had failed me I asked him to repeat the figures. He did so, they were as I had heard. So I asked him how he had calculated the average. Somewhat contemptuously, having to deal with a deaf old man, he explained that to get an average you add the figures together and then divide by 3. I asked him to do that for me. Perhaps to humor me he did so. There was the noise of keys tapping ........pause ....... Keys tapping ....... Pause. Then eventually, oh the average is £5400.
I said that would do nicely and the insurers sent me a cheque for the balance.
Always pays to listen and check what others tell you.
