Has anyone got experience of M-Class??? - Budget around 14k

I had a Defender 2002 TD5 before my Z4. It was brilliant!

Reasonable on fuel (28mpg) and in the 50k I had it over three years (40-90k) I replaced:

1 set of tyres -£700 ish BFG AT
Windscreen Wiper gear things -£230
Diff Seal a couple of time - cheap
A couple of other seals for weeping oils - again not a lot
Coolant hose -£80

+ normal servicing.

And to finish, it cost me £2k in depreciation over that time and mileage buying from dealer and selling back to another dealer!

Fantastic cars! BUT not very comfortable and not for everyone!
 
I had a jeep grand Cherokee did over50k in it with no problems ,it's a cheap mans range rover but great spec and fits all the crap in the back ,my wife had a cayenn great car ,but boy there thirsty sevice cost was ok through a good Indy
 
+1for the jeep grand Cherokee ... Had 1 for 3 years, never put a foot wrong, only thing needing replacing was a gaitor for an MOT. Only got rid as a 4.0 litre flat 6 petrol hauling that weight was around 18-20 mpg. Thirstier than a zed!!

ML....Riddled with expensive electrical faults,bulid quality is shoddy..And RUST!.. I mean what are they thinking!

RR S....Hmmm...ditto above without rot... Heaven forbid you buy a diesel and have turbo problems(they do suffer from turbo failure) Body off job,dealers are charging £7000 to replace turbo's....Indy's around £4500-£5000.. Suspension is always crashy and noisy,its just a constant revolving door of bushes and ball joints.
Supercharger is pick of the crop and not far behind diesel in MPG stats....Have fitted SC cooler pump and AC rads and can work out £££££

BMW X5's..... Diesels have cracked manifolds,duff injectors and turbo's,wear suspension out and general have an appetite for tyres and brakes... The odd gearbox also goes pop and have replaced rear diffs,seems no rhyme or reason though..

Audi Q7's.... Be carefull,they can bankrupt you..... They have water leaks,MMI issues,burn out tail lights,diesel break swirl motors every 18 months (or so it seems) and £1200 a pair fitted.. They also destroy tyres at a rate you wouldnt have thought possible.. my friends 3.0Tdi has 2 sets a year doing 18k miles..

Landcruisers.... Still at the top of the pile,but not as good as they used to be....Diesels are noisy and unrefined,eat brakes on an annual basis and always seem to have a leaky radiator ??

Shogun... Once was brilliant,not not so good....Petrol and diesel engines are troublesome,noisy diffs not uncommon..Usually down to low oil and leaky seals.Just a little unrefined...

If i needed to have a 4x4 i think it would be RR vogue or X5 petrol...

Personally i would avoid diesel RRS and Q7s...

Thats an ideal break down :thumbsup: really appericate that ... were thinking of diesel as after 27+ mpg ideally

I was thinking the XC90 looked a good option till a little bit of research revealed electrical issues and gearboxs issues, which seem to be very common, stories of 4 gearboxes in 100k!

Have just sold my Rangie after 3 years and moved to a Porsche Cayenne.No comparison on the road Porsche moves.I have one with a Porsche full service history and 12 months Porsche warranty.Its the petrol but Im not worried as I do very few miles.Its a lovely car my only point would be the Porsche is not as comfortable as the Rangie.
 
I noticed the yawn at the Touareg :wink: but i had one for 2 years & it was a fantastic motor with all the tricks you could want & remapped can move on at a good rate :oops: high 20,s /early 30,s achievable but as with all the other SUV's do have their known faults ,
that said a decent warranty with WD is around £500 /yr which would cover the worst ?

While some may consider this a joke, you got rid of the RRS for economy. A few folks at work have the Honda CRX and love them. That would give your wife the height of ride she wants, and the economy you were looking for.

Also Mitsubishi make a nice small SUV, the Outlander that is well specced and nice to drive. I nearly bought one but the rear extra seats were not much more than deck chairs in quality which put us off. Otherwise I'd have had on instead of the S-Max and may now get one anyway as I don't need seats 6 and 7 now, just the load bay.

Want an S-max? :D
