Has anyone fitted a LSD, how was it?

Ive currently tuned my BMW Z4 35i and im now currently traction limited and I’ve read that a LSD will improve traction more than any other upgrade at this point, is this true and has anyone fitted one and how did it transform the car, possibly has anyone recorded 0-60 times before and after or noted the difference round a track, I’ve seen the Quaife ATB or Wavetrac?

For reference when researching this, it’s because when my car was stock I got a 0-60 time of 5.0, then I did stage 1 remap, which is noticeably quicker but the launch control is ruined because it Wheelspin’s so much so I got 4.99, 0-20 being worse and past that better, I’ve had brand new rear tyres fitted because the old ones were bad to be honest but I still got exactly the same 4.99, and with an MHD stage 1+ it’s even worse, so traction right now is the problem now not power

Quaife is the default standard certainly in the UK for the E89..works very well especially in bumpy / wet circumstances

Long term reliability and seamless integration with existing nannies are pluses..

Not the cheapest..

Excellent UK support / warranty

You’ll need the crown wheel machining off so not a home jobbie

I have nothing to add regarding the LSD, but as you seem interested in 0-60 I remember this video of a guy with an MHD 1+ 35i doing a dragy run. You can see the times in the picture.

He didn't mention an LSD, and I don't know what tyres he was running, if they were warm, and how dry the road was (looked pretty dry).

But should give you an indication of roughly where it should be, assuming you get the launch off.

I don’t know how he got that then, the only I can think is that on XHP you can change the rpm of the launch control, the standard 4,000 is just too high so it Wheelspin’s maybe he changed it to 3,000, then with some other optimisations he dialled it a little lower but I’m 4.9 so nowhere near this so I haven’t a clue how he managed this, is his manual maybe he perfected Wheelspin with manual whereas in auto you don’t have that freedom with the clutch?

Also where did you see this video, maybe I can try and ask him what he’s got

So if I get one get Quaife, and give to a bmw specialist to fit it?

Can an open diff be refitted later on, I feel it’ll be hard to sell a z4 which has in any way been modified

It's definitely an automatic; the shifts are far too quick in the video. I found it on Facebook last May when I was researching MHD myself, no idea which 'group' unfortunately. I tried uploading it here, but it only allows pictures.

It's less of a wheelspin in the video and more of a few chirps until about 2s into the launch, but he's still moving hard.

Is yours full on wheelspinning and getting bogged down?

Best bet is to buy a used e89 35i or 35is diff auto / manual ..send it to Bird’s Quaife Uk agent…they’ll check it, repair as necessary and fit the diff…then do a hot swap…then you can retrofit if if you want to sell it..that’s what most of us have done..

You can’t undo a Quaife fitment ..

Full on wheel spinning yes, if I could have it launch at 3,000rpm instead of 4,000 I think it would be better

So buy an open diff and send it to Quaife?

Then they work on it make it a LSD, then when I fit that to the car I still have my current Open diff to fit back when I come to sell the car ?

Am I right in saying that, if so how much is this roughly all in and how long do they take

E85 rather than E89, had birds fit one to mine recently and it’s made the car far better to drive. Launching and cornering I can really feel it pushing from the rear collectively rather than trying to spin a wheel. Pretty much no slip in the wet now, previously would spin in first and second in a brisk launch.

Think mine was about £1800 total at Birds, dropped car off at 0830, was ready for 1530 with some other small things done too.

I want to see if mine wheel spins now, i'm also running a 1+ MHD tune. I'll try it and report back on the weekend.
Sounds good, let me know if yours also launches from 4,000rpm, I know with XHP you can change but I don’t have XHP yet otherwise id drop it to 3,000 I think would be better

That’s cool to hear man, it’s funny it was ChatGPT that said about a LSD could improve my traction more than anything lol so I’ve since done my own research and it looks like the best upgrade I could get right now both for drive ability and performance even more so than a stage 2 for example

And that’s £2,500 including cost of a used diff?

Me posting to them, them posting back and then me fitting it?
Yes that’s the total price of everything except removing / fitting the diff..

FWIW best to fit adjustable rear camber arms whilst the diff is out …impossible otherwise..
