Hardtop roof liner sagging

The hardtop I’ve bought has a bit of an issue with sagging - happens to the best of us!

The roof lining has dropped at the front in places. I’ve found a post on how to remove it but just wondering if anyone knows how it’s composed or has pictures of it out? Basically, if I remove it will I be able to separate the fabric from the thin foam underneath? I’m wondering if I could recover the foam in alcantara maybe?

Any help or advice much appreciated…

I had this "problem" with my e46 convertible hardtop. Luckily, I knew a car upholsterer nearby that removed the old lining and replaced it with new. Apparently, the adhesive used by BMW isn't made for a long life expectancy. I was offered alcantara, and it looks and feels amazing, but I preferred the OE look. From memory, the OE cloth I chose came with a sponge backing. 4 years later and I'm still a happy I chose OE.

Actually it’s not the glue that fails on headliners… it’s the foam disintegrates and causes separation

I’ve had the headliner from my hardtop removed since before the pandemic and still not gotten around to getting it re-covered.

It’s an easy disassemble, and shouldn’t be too tough to find someone to do it for you unless you feel brave enough to have a go yourself

Thanks, I’m thinking I might be able to cut some thin foam to shape, glue fabric on and reattach? If it looks s**t, i’ll try and source an original headliner…
